I have begun looking for colleges... Something which offers a well rounded smorgasborg of music theory/history etc & electronic music (everything from recording techniques -> MIDI -> DSP and music related programming)... So far I have found some stuff.... University of No. Colorado seems to be Ok... Indiana Univ and Oregon (State)? University both look pretty intruiging as does New College in Sarasota... though neither of the Universities offer anything Re: programming (not specific to music anyway)... in New College I could fashion some classes on my own... BUT... I am sure that I have missed some schools... so could anyone offer some suggestions? Preferably in the US... but I am not opposed to leaving the country either... ???? thanks, phil

If you don't mind hippies, you might check out Evergreen State in Olympia Washington (state). A pretty liberal (for better and a bit for worse) school and I know they've got a fairly good collection of Moog modules (old) and computers fwiw. Solenoid On Mon, 2 Aug 1999, Phil C wrote:

Sure you've got the right school?? I just looked throught the catalog and didn't find anything remotely related save two classes related to "computer" music. If you know the course numbers, I'd love to know....

Brian Ferneyhough, Roger Reynolds, George Lewis & Bertram Turetzky are supposed to be teaching there. If they do I'd say you're doing really well. Ferneyhough is one of the most important composers of this century, George Lewis is one of the first and only jazz musicians to incorporate interactive electronics into live improvisation and Bertram Turetzky is a legendary figure in avant-garde classical music since he was probably the first contrabass player to specialize in extended techniques. You've also got the SONOR & SIRIUS ensembles which specialize in contemporary works. There's a Xenakis CD on Neuma that was all done at UCSD. It looks like there are a lot of computer music and music technology courses offered there plus a great looking "History Of Electronic Music" course. Drusca emosissy wrote:

Not to mention that he's just an all-around badass. I'd kill my grandmother to take that Jazz Improvisation class from him! Aside from JJ Johnson, George Lewis is the mightiest trombonist on the face of the earth (and that's not even counting all of the electronic stuff that he does... For those of you who don't know, he wrote software for the Atari ST that reacts to his improvisations, and then he reacts to what it plays back at him, and so on, it's pretty neato.) check out the records he did John Zorn and Bill Frisell ('News for Lulu' and 'More News for Lulu') which are absolutely mind blowing... that guy can get so much air through his horn it's rediculous, and he plays faster than JJ. Well, I didn't think I wanted to go back to school, but now I think I might have to change my mind :) .Bil. ich|bin|ein|kopieier

i tried posting this earlier but it didn't seem to go through.... wow. looks like we have a pretty damn good music department. the department must be quite small. for one thing, 800 people graduated from my college last june (UCSD is divided into 5 colleges). only one was a music major... a music/biology double major to be exact. secondly, only music majors are premitted to take upper division courses in the departmnet. non-majors must petition the department (this is not the case with other departments). Anyway, thanks for all the info. I might try to sneak into some of those classes next quarter. ---- emosissy

I went there for a year. I couldn't handle the weather (all overcast, all the time) but the school is great - provided that hippies don't give you hives (as they do me). The courses are taught by teams of instructors and are very, very good. You get written evaluations instead of grades and the emphasis is on learning, not performing well on tests. Anyway, they also have amazing amounts of fun stuff (ie computers, equipment, etc) available to all students. You can also design your own classes and if you can find a teacher who will sponsor you (not as hard as it sounds) you can get credit for doing absolutely anything (or nothing, even). --sharon solenoid wrote:
