Are you sure you're not talking about Eminem? *cough* I only caught a glimpse of the extensive MTV coverage, but I do recall Kid Rock screaming, "America No 1! America No 1! We're number one baby!" when some asshole frat boy starting waving an american flag into the camera. What a dick. Counterculture, my ass. Kid Rock and Eminem are part of a disturbing marketing trend where rap music is directed towards poor white teenagers -- the "white trash" demographic that keeps Jerry Springer's ratings high. Anyone who thinks these two have an ounce of creativity or artistic credibility in them should be put up against a wall and sprayed with a garden hose. Woodstock was always about the money and the marketing, even up to the riot -- a brilliant tactic on the part of the producers to set up drama for Woodstock IV: The Sequel. Then we get to the "rave producers". Enter cokehead Matt E. Silver, who in some drugged-out fury screams repeatedly "This is the future, america!" when asked by a journalist about "the rave music." If you watch MTV, if you buy the products, if you go to the shows, you're buying into a pre-packaged, bland, homogenized, tasteless experience. You can call that elitism, you can call it whatever you want, but that's the reality. -ar

You know, a diss like that really requires a response. I like eminem a lot, but I hate kid rock. Kid Rock basically revels in white trash stupidity, and has found a willing audience. Eminem on the other hand most definitely came up from the streets, and has his own lyrical style that people will be biting on for years. To lump them together is stupid. Kid Rock panders, whereas Eminem seems to me to really spit his venom with directness, honesty, and real humor. And I don't know if you really listen to hip hop, but Eminems vocal talents are unique. MCs generally ride the beat with a chanting cadence. Eminem is all over the place rhythmically, which would be the kiss of death for a lesser MC. But he sells his rhymes with great diction and confidence, and makes the natural speech rhythm alternately ride freely and hit hard on the beat. Lesser MC's are stuck making jumprope rhyme rhythms, but Eminem hits more like a good jazz drummer. I'm not asking you to like either one, but I think your analysis is wrong. Eminem is all about saying what everyone else is too polite or scared to say, and Kid Rock is David Lee Roth with a DJ. Eminem was a battle MC champion before he had a pot to piss in. Kent was right, people are scared to admit to that these things are a product of our society. how often do you talk to people who say 'oh yeah my mom's a pothead'? you think they think it's stupid that their mom is a pothead? no. they're scared to admit it. this is coming from someone who knew em's indie shit a year before 'my name is' dropped, he deserves more respect than anyone else who's selling hip hop records today (unless you count the roots or outkast), in that he actually has SKILL. he actually earned his way to a major label deal, through self promotion and dedication, as opposed to the standard record exec-creation group/artist (see: dmx) although he may be selling records because of his shock tacticts and white image. he worked hard to get where he is and has an unique style and loads of talent. he may be a pop icon right now, but trust me, the kid has skills. he's very diverse, he can kick standard battle raps, stories ('just the two of us'), etc. he has a unique delivery and voice and isn't afraid to speak his mind. a modern day slick rick. i have to be honest though, i didn't like his album, but i base it more on the shitty production. i prefer the slim shady ep, personally.

but they're not going to be any less scared when the subject is trivialized by some goofy rapper. You have to distinguish between writing from an antisocial point of view, the better to hold it up for examination, and actually advocating those things. Dostoevsky didn't murder anyone, but he did write "Crime and Punishment." Not that Eminem is Dostoevsky. Actually the mushroom song is my least favorite. I like "rock bottom" the best.

do the kids that listen to Eminem draw this distinction? I seriously doubt many of them do. when they hear first-person rapping about 40s and blunts and date rape and being hard, they're not laughing at the absurdity of it all... What Dostoyevski can do with a 500+ page novel is quite different than what Eminem can do in a 5 minute song. irony and absurdity can be developed as themes, and in Crime & Punishment, when Raskolnikov gets down on his knees and thanks God after being exiled, we know Dostoyevski's intentions and beliefs. Eminem is not drawing a clear line like Dostoyevski. And Eminem is heard on the radio, speaking in first person, by an audience of American teenagers many of which whom have no concept of literary irony (and i'm not referring to one socioeconomic class here.. i'm talking about teens in every mall in every part of town.) when your music is played over the airwaves and hyped by a major business and propped up by MTV, there is a certain responsibility you have to take. MCs who continue to rap about these tried-and-true, generic concepts like, "how great i am," "how much weed i smoked yesterday," and "how i fucked all these bitches since i was 13" are going to have to deal with a mad backlash one day. i dont know.. eminem touches the same spots for me as: south park land of the loops king missle i dont take it as any real social commentary, i laugh a little and i enjoy the beats.. i think if more top 40 pop music was along these lines, i would enjoy sitting in the dentist office or being on hold while on the phone a lot more :) to diverge quite a bit, the new coil cd "musick to play in the dark" has the most amazing little "pop" song on it: "the dreamer is still asleep". it almost reminds me of depeche mode or something.. good, dark, flowing, catching, smooth pop. the best thing since kid rock. chris.

I have a track on Instinct's "King Of The Jungle Vol.1 (20 Bass Bumpin' Jungle Phatties!)" that has some ragga MC rhyming about having nothing to do on a Friday night or some such (heavy empathy from my Knoxville boys for that sentiment) and he says "Oh My Gosh" in a truly impassioned manner every time the beat breaks. Yeah I have heard this, they used to use it on Kool FM in London a few years back.. alone with 'Big up ya chest', and if it was a particualy good selection then it would be 'big up ya hairy chest' That always used to bring a smile to my face... infact I have some choice Pirate talk on tape at home...
