Nyaaaaaah, we'll be missing Ali McBeal coz they'll be screening 3 hours worth of Woodstock yet again tonight.... I sat through far too much of it already... just out of morbid curiosity. Here a few highlights ::: Wyclef Jean displayed the ultimate ignorance/arrogance by playing the Stars and Stripes and for his trouble got pelted by paper cups (or whatever was handy as missiles). Too much ganja, boys! Korn? The crowd seemed to respond to them, although from what I saw I wouldn't say Life is Peachy in Korn-land. Counting Crows (who'll be touring here - South Africa - next month)... jeez, another soupy mix with Mr Jones and Omaha the sing-alongs one might expect; for the rest the dreadlocked lead singer (who is he again?) was way off pitch most of the time. Sheryl Crow (a Crow to be counted?) seemed blissfully happy to take the stage, smiling as she sailed off pitch, missing words at the beginning of phrases (Every Day is a Winding Road... she missed the word "every" virtually every time, coming in happily smiling with DAY). Sartorially she took the country route - bra straps showing, not a care in the world - and what WAS that G- string thing on the outside of her pants? Who else murdered what? Damn, Kid Rock made me laugh and the audience seemed to like them. Never heard of this group before - just how old is their "front man" ? Not a moment's worth of jitters there: bucket loads of (ill-founded) confidence. All in all, say what you will about him, but Jamiroquai gave the most impressive performance by far (imo). Incredibly tight band - amazing drummer, great bass - their engineer knew what he was doing and the mix came through loud and clear with prefect presence. Jay Kay himself resplendant in wacky headgear never missed a note, jumped and cavorted for the camera and generally sounded superb. Did any of you go, or rather, what's the general consensus in America regarding the festival? Hell, if this is the current state of music, I shall henceforth bury myself even deeper in IDM :-) I *

The newspapers describe "the hot new music" these days as "heavy-hop" or "hip-metal" or "hip-hop influenced heavy rock," lots of stick-up-the-ass ways of saying that Korn sucks and so does Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock (if trip-hop is watered down from "true" hip-hop, certainly a guy with a silly hat singing nonsense is as well, eh?), who are allegedly leading some sort of hip-hop/metal fusion thing around here these days. Just like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and John Leguizamo are leading the Latin pop explosio Anyway, there's lots of media coverage on MTV, newspapers, etc., but just the normal adults-amazed-at-the-young'uns stuff, I suppose. Sections about the extreme sports and how there was a birth, a death, and some arrests, blah... Geoff np: "bawitdaba, dang-a-dang diggy diggy diggy..."

Man, I don't care what anyone says, Kid Rock is the shit. He does not give a FUCK. A friend of mine saw him in Ann Arbor or somewhere several years ago, and apparently there were only about 15 people there, but the Kid rocked the place to the ground. Also, his rhymes are so unabashedly stupid and wack that part of me can't help but like them... the thought of this guy in his basement screaming "WHAT'S MY NAME?" into a microphone over some AC/DC loop is just, I dunno, cool and punkrock... not to mention he has lines like "Cruisin' through town in my jacked up truck/Eyes open cause I'm scopin' for a big butt slut" (from the classic "Balls in Your Mouth") I haven't heard any of his new stuff, but 'The Polyfuze Method' is great. I'm from the midwest though, so I'm predisposed to like stuff with Led Zeppelin and AC/DC samples. (Incidentally, I'll be hading back to Indiana next week, if anyone knows of any IDM hangouts or cool record stores in southern Indiana... oh wait, I know there aren't any already, so never mind, hehe) I'm surprised the Kid didn't get big sooner, as his stuff is pretty much parallels the Beastie Boys, only his lyrics started on the level of "License to Ill" and went down from there :) .Bil. ich|bin|ein|kopieier

Among anybody who has truly cultivated their taste in music to a high degree in this day and age, there is always a variety of Dada irony lurking underneath the surface. Half the reason I find albums like Plaid's Rest Proof Clockwork or MAT-101's Goodbye Mum is due to the immense amount of bad kitsch and ridiculous pop-aping going on throughout them. Finding occasional enjoyment in simple, dumb-as-bricks music is a perfectly acceptable thing to do, even on this list. Weren't we all just discussing Cookie Monster's wax discography?
