Hey, Completed my first record binge this weekend.... spent 4 hours going through the cut-out bin at Gramaphone in Chicago, and pulled out 20 gems... which leads me to a couple of questions: Blakdoctor doublepack is credited to Doc Martin and Mark Bell. Is this the same Mark Bell from LFO? Fucking brilliant mad house tracks on this release..... worth every penny. YMC on Source Records... looks like an album, but who are they? I'm a sucker for everything on that label, but more than often the labels are missing credits (and an album title in this case). Any ideas? Tom Middleton's production on A Man Called Adam's Duende #2 is awesome. Buy it on sight... (on Other Records). Bought lots of other stuff too..... which leads me to ask, WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT BASEMENT JAXX ON THIS LIST? Got a promo of the album a couple of days ago, and the new single "Red Alert" yesterday.... top stuff indeed! It's full-on house with IDM-esque pruduction values.... lots of 8-bit filtering, noising crunchy sounds and computer game sampling... if you're in a record store, sample "Red Alert" for some wicked sounds. Wow.... Aaron np: blakdoctor

I was always under the impression that it was the same Mark Bell. Check out Mark's Blakkat records also on the Shaboom label for more of the same brilliant house sound.

The YMC record on Source, called Orange Peel is indeed an album produced by two Swedes: Yan and Cpook-E. They also have a few eps on the US Yoshitoshi label and another album on the Swedish Deck Deli label. Their style is a mix of smooth and hard house all bedded in deep lush melodies. All YMC releases are recommended in my book.

Basement Jaxx, and their Atlantic Jaxx sister label, have done some good stuff in the past - the Samba Magic and Fly Life mixes being my personal favorites. But the Jaxx crew does produce their share of dance- floor commercial vocal house. You probably dont see much mention of them on this list because their tracks are in the straightforward floorfriendly house style that seems to offend many on this list.

Excellent. Been looking fwd to hearing the new Basement Jaxx album. Personally i've never considerd any BJ material to have IDM-esque production values but maybe they're doing something a little different on this new album. -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

There are actually two different "Mark Bell" people doing electronic music well these days. One Mark Bell was half of LFO with Gez Varley, did stuff with Wildplanet, has recorded for many labels including Planet E and others. The other Mark Bell operates the Shaboom label, does a lot of work with Doc Martin, records as Blakkat, etc. In simplest terms, the former-LFOer Mark Bell is working more in techno territory, whereas the Shaboom/Doc Martin- related Mark Bell is working more in house territory. It is certainly confusing when both are in the UK, sorta how Dave Clarke (the DJ/musician who did the classic "Red" series) and Dave Clarke (who helps run Soma records) both live/work in the UK.
