A hearty recommendation for an upcoming ( tomorrow ) NYC show. Monday the 19th of July- Calla Record Release Calla, Birdwatcher, A.R.E. Weapons The Cooler 9p 416 West 14th Street 252-2390 Calla is having a record release party at The Cooler. Calla bridge the gap ( or perhaps just cleverly appropriate segments of the gap ) between blues ( in a twangy/country/delta blues kind of way ) shoegazer ( take all of the *best* elements of *that* genre ) minimal post ambient electronic (without the "a" ), rock and post rock. There...several marketing genres to chew on. If the Tom Waits' band were to trade Tom for a whispering NickCave, via a minimal electronic album for a Wim Wenders film, you're close. Highly recommended. I have only seen them once, in what was apparently one of their better shows. I also have their "demo" which has been now become, in some form, their album, on Sub Rosa(!) nonetheless. This is surely Sub Rosa's only "rock" ( for lack of a better word ) act. Self titled Cd, vinyl(?) . Look for it as it comes out soon ( now? ) Calla, at least on the demo CD and one show I've seen, are *exceptional*. They challenge pigeonholing, as their sound rather than sounding derivative, is as if it romantically is reassembling it's genred predecessors. Top notch music of the past, present *and* future.
