The best, easiest-to-understand, and only widely available American release of Stockhausen is 1959's "Kontakte," from an Ecstatic Peace issue of a 1978 performance by James Tenney and others. Got to cast the vote for 'Hymnen' as being the best. 4 sides of cut-up, edit, noise, based around various national anthems of the world. There is a really good piece on Stockhausen in the last issue of The Wire. If I remember correctly it said that the majority of his work is available on CD directly from him. If anyone is interested I can dig through the issue and get the adress. Probably the best way to go if you're new to Stockhausen as the vinyl is pretty pricey when you can find it. Take Care Jeff

Jeff-- You forgot to mention that you need to be a millionaire to be able to afford the bulk of Stockhausen's catalog. Ever check the prices at Other Music, which has most of his work in stock? If I sent you some cassettes, would you tape Hymnen for me? I'm dying to hear it, but don't want to take out a loan to buy it. It was made with the national anthems of many countries, but modulated and morphed beyond recognition... luce79 luce79@wanadoo.fr
