part 1 of a quick review of new stuff i got: swap 'swap' (musik aus strom) 12" -- surprisingly good. unmistakably autechre-influenced. more distorted sounds. in the vein of that laid-back track on lp5 which is one of my favorites on the disc, incidentally. not very complex but enjoyable at 33rpm. maybe it sounds blah at 45rpm like the previous while 12", didn't try yet as 33rpm is more than satisfying to me. anthony child & andrew read / speedranch^jansky noise split 12" (fat cat) -- the first half with child & read i found immensely boring. postmodern ambient soundscapes entitled 'guitar treatments', sounding too prudent for their own good. wooooosshhhh... ting ting ting... ptptpt wooooooooooshhhh...shbshbshbshhhhh... yawn. the s^jn side however is probably worth the price of the 12" alone. the first track has 'coherent' beats & it sounds massively noisy (although more together than the 'welcome to execrate' stuff). the second one is an all-on noise assault. the problem with this 12" is that i don't see who could enjoy both sides equally as they're so different. continued monday or some other time unless i forget / fail to form an opinion on the following: - v/a 'i'm so bored with the usa #2' - mat-101 'goodbye mum' -- david turgeon at http://www.notype.com

*swoop* Here is one... I thought that a1 (the A's) was pretty blah, but I think that a2 is amazingly beautiful.... it has an intense ... though sparse ... painful beauty to it... the wandering bag pipe'ish sound along with the long drawn out deep strings and the nice high synth in and out... lovely... and at the same time... I loved both of the b sides (esp b1 and that dolemite sample)... over all though I think that is a fantastic 12". my $0.02... phil

agreed -- a2 is much better than a1, but it drags on & on & on & on & on & on & eventually i didn't care enough about it to like it. probably good as dj fodder though... some great ambient swooshes to throw inbetween those 2 tracks that you just can't beatmatch (not that i would know). -- david
