The Funkstorung "Additional Products" is quite a welcome disk to me. Those boys have schooled in the Autechre end of the pool for a while, but have survived with some funk intact. There for about 5 minutes I listened to the Bjork remix at 33 instead of 45. At 45 it sounds good but at 33 it turns into very deep dub with some mad icelandic monk warbling along. The Wu tang mix in my opinion was too short -- those computer created beats against an R&B groove really sounds like viable music of the future. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net

Yes indeed, quite a lot of fun, and absolutely spot on observation about the funkiness maintained where others have smoothed it away. Also, I was surprised and pleased at how well it holds together as an album (as opposed to just an anthology of remixes, if you get my meaning). The F-troops add a layer of distinctly Funkstorung sounds to each of their endeavours. m -- the foundry realaudio samples at: http://www.foundrysite.com/sounds1.html upcoming releases... eM <the motor sessions ep> (lmtd. 7"/lmtd. cdr) [OUT NOW] the foundry <mote> (cd) [out 6/30/99] the apiary <a.d.> (cd) [out autumn 99] also... eM remix on <knots> issued on thousand/wmo [out 8/10/99] http://wiremailorder.com/thousand/knots.htm

I am all about the IDM/Hip-Hop collaboration found in the Wu-Tang remix. Some may think it a low point but I personally think that the connections between Autechresque IDM and the stylistics of rap are strong enough to be tastefully combined (to an extent, of course. I challenge anyone to think of a point of agreement between rap and the lovely yet chaotic sounds of something like "acroyear2." Maybe if it became one of those jump-up tunes with the ragga-mon doing his double-time bit with the beat. Oohh, I'm cringing). Zipping up flame retardant gear. Trust me, I remember the Autechre/Hip-Hop Thread/War that raged fiercely for awhile John _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm of mixed minds about the WuRemix. On one hand, I like the sheer destructive qualities of the mix. But on the other, I don't think FunkStorung have any real clue about the track's structure. They mangle it, but don't resussitate the corpse in any particular way. It just lies there, all bloody, funkless, smelly. Still, quite a spectacular corpse if that's what your after. I just don't think it offers any particular insights into a possible meeting of "IDM" and hip-hop. Without funk or any room for rap, what's the point? Plus, Timbaland has already solved the problem in a much more satisfactory way. I haven't heard it myself, but my friend tells me that on his latest Ginuwine instrumental, he samples Nitzer Ebb, Caberet Voltaire and Godzilla. And it's a hit single. I mean, hot damn! Sam
