Some VERY interesting titles have been glued to the player these past few days.. Thug's "Isolated Rhythm Chock" is a cross between smooth and abstract beats with subtle synth notes weaved ever so tightly within each track. Some highlights on hear include "Dolphin Muffler", "Rhino Song" and "Let Us Chip" (I'll be featuring these on Friday's show). Hydrant Records, who have recently made the move from Chicago to California have just put out their latest title by Richard Bailey aka Proem. "Burn Plate no. 1" sounds like a cross between BoC and (older) Squarepusher. Many of his tracks are built on a platform of distorted beat patterns matched with sizzling high notes and screeching melodies locked in (almost) each groove. The sounds are quite consistent throughout this full length, and veer in the direction of experimental electronica with an oddly amusing pulse.. Check out Hydrant Records at http://www.hydrant-records.com for more info on related topics, and stay tuned for an appearance on Kracfive's "Kracfivian Mecha-Penguins Vol 3" compilation (includes the likes of Colongib, Pacman, Bauri, V/VM, Phthalocyanine and many more).. Last but DEFINITELY not least, is Emanate's 002 & 003 releases by none other then those two guys who made the Emanated comp so wonderful: Lilienthal and If.Then.Else. If.Then.Else (aka Deno) introduce's his synthetic array of tweaked melodies and smooth debris on "Realizations". Rather then make comparisons with other artists in the electronica field, If.Then.Else pours an ambient stream of beats and melodies inside the listener while your ears remain only a function of the body. Recommended listening.. Lilienthal's "Castor&Pollux (aka Arrow Kleeman) is another one of my favorites. While maintaining an overall "soft" feeling throughout, many of these tracks warp and twist around disconnected beats and smooth atmospheric chaos. This one will clearly stand as a benchmark for quality IDM music for 1999. Definitely worth seeking out.
