"Seven Marimbas" (or is it 6? 8? whatever, it's x marimbas, 5 < x < 20) Sounds a _lot_ like Oval, sort of... minus the clicking. they mix really well. And it's just plain incredible. I've never liked music for 14 musicians, which I'm guessing someone will recommend (seems to be the "classic" Reich album). Just think it's pretty boring. Some quick opinions: Senking - 2nd 12" on Karaoke Kalk - sorta nice but sorta boring. Chair comp on Elise and Jack (Shifts, Rapoon, Fuxa, etc) - very nice. very noisy. not very IDM. surgeon - balance - very nice, esp. the more minimal tracks. burger/ink - las vegas - third try, it really does grow on you. excellent. Null - 0.0004 - very nice. noise with loops and rhythms. I like it. Bombardier - Violence - new Vinyl Comm release. Excellent. noisy as fuck, sorta DHRish but sorta not. that's not very helpful. Michael Schumacher - Fidicin Drones - very very nice organic ambience via guitar. Nightmares on Wax - Carboot Soul - pile of donkeypoo. a big one. tarwater - remixed (3rd eye foundation, kiln, bundy k brown) - thoroughly average. even the 3rd eye foundation mix. --- the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto

as always, one man's boring is another man's hypnotic. when i gather up the energy to put it in the player, I find I quite enjoy "music for 18 musicians." though it does tend to wear at it's full length, and I don't find myself listening to it often, it just seems so...conceptually important. it also shames coldcut's recent attempt to adapt/mimic it, though i don't blame them for trying. it's good to wear your heroes on your sleeve. me, I think a more important non-electronic IDM record is stravinsky's rite of spring. but then, it's almost 3 am here. rob

and yet that still is the best track on the Reich remixes album (imo). And their Music for No Musicians on Let us Play is also a pretty good track. Music for 18 Musicians - I've only got that on tape, and the cassette runs out before the piece finishes, so it's not one I listen to much because I find that irritating - but in truth I must agree with your comment that it gets a bit wearing. The only other Reich I possess is Desert Music, which is choral and I wouldn't label it IDM. I * np : Yellowcake - inner space stations

I'm not too big a fan of it myself. Got it cos it was the essential. would be nice if i could just meditate on it, listen to the changes. Still really impressive that he got live musicians to play that kindof stuff. Pretty but somewhat boring. I really enjoy the Reich Remixed (I even gave tranquility bass a second chance after their "megamix" which sounds like a bad idea but isn't). I gotta get me some more of the originals, cos i feel that's where most of the quality comes from. I now wish i would have scammed the Reich boxed set from Musicboulevard. And that would definitely have all the essential reich on it, because it has all of his stuff on it. Probably a good use of $100. _________________________________ Adam Roesch / roesch@augsburg.edu University of Idaho / Moscow / ID / USA Visit my Fila Brazillia/Pork Recordings fan site: http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/pork/ "Because success needs killing" TRICKY
