Does anyone have any info on this new Art of Noise album, "THE SEDUCTION OF CLAUDE DEBUSSY"? The description seems kind of interesting but I don't think their newer releases have been receiving much praise. --nick. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I got a promo a month or so back, and while the production is wonderful, the album is basically crap except for a nice ambient track near the end. Lots of pretentious voiceovers by John Hurt, Rakim sounding foolish rapping about Debussy and Beaudelaire, horrible car commericial jungle beats - bleah. The instrumental version of Roni Size's mix on the "Metaforce" single is OK, though. Greg

Nick: in short, "no!" Greg Clow posted a wonderfully written slam against this, if i remember correctly, and I had to nod my head in agreement. If you liked the AON of old, you'll think "god, why didn't they just leave their reputation intact and not record again?" if you've never heard AON before, you'll likely think to yourself "yuck, what is this saccharine crap?" it's, to put it simply, drum n bass lite, but with voiceovers throughout that relate to the title (but the theme doesn't redeem the bad music). i think the label might have realized this, because the new single with rakim on the m-i-c is a doublepack that includes two of their quality pieces from back in the day: moments in love and another older one (don't have the record here at home) hope this helps. andrew duke noze_brotherhood@juno.com wrote:

I posted a typically mean-spirited review of this one when I got a promo copy a few weeks back. I later had my suspicions of its general suckiness confirmed when a friend of mine who has been an AoN fan for more or less his entire conscious life returned to me and exclaimed sentiments which while unprintable in a family publication such as this were quite similar to my original interpretations of the recording's value to the world. It licks the sweat off a dead donkey's balls. Tom

Well, being an AoN fan since the first EP, I find myself really pleased with the album. Not because it bears any resemblance to their earlier work (I feared a lukewarm rehash of past glories) but because it is a mature, musical, and very solid _contemporary_ _pop_ album. It is not in the least 'genre IDM', or 'genre D&B' (lite, or otherwise). This may explain why it has got much better reviews outside the dance scene than in it... peter

Agreed. AoN have never been about IDM, in any shape or form. But they have been influential. As you said, it's just a decent pop album, as all the previous AoN albums have been. I don't know what folks in here were honestly expecting to hear. 'The Seduction of Claude Debussy' is basically a celebration of ZTT's new-found independence, now that Warners have chopped them off. Whether or not it'll see ZTT return to the good ol' days of arty pop (Propaganda, FGTH, etc.) remains to be seen. As for the pretentious nature of the album... as any ZTT fan knows, it's all part of the packaging. It's ironic pretentiousness. The whole point is that it's meant to mean nothing. Let Paul Morley have his fun (although I did prefer his approach to 808 State's 'Don Solaris'). -- Mark Stevens http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/
