oh, yeah, I forgot about that tune! I was just mixing Le Freak with my friend pasta for a bbq July 4 in my studio; Chic had such perfect production. For a little Chic: http://hem1.passagen.se/discoguy/tributes/chic.html ---- from the above site , not sure how accurate the story is ----- Especially when you listen to "Le Freak" you can hear the special "Chic-technique" Nile and Bernard used when they wrote songs. They used to start with a intro and then they went right on the chorus. Almost every other song used the "standard" rutine... with intro, verse and then the chorus. But this technique of building a song was something Nile had picked up from an old jazz musician. Check out your Chic records and you will hear this for yourself. The next year the group returned with one of the most important singles of all times... "Good times". Edwards great bassline was copied by Queen in "Another one bites the dust" and the song was used in "the Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the wheels of steel". The song was also the base for the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's delight". The first time Nile heard "Rapper's delight" was in a New York club. He first thought it was the DJ who was rapping over his and Bernard's "Good times". He thought it was quite cool and went up to the DJ and came to find out that this was actually another group using "his" song in their record without having got the permission in any way to use the song. Nile and Bernard naturally threatened to sue these people. These people answered by sending armed gangsters to the studio, the gangsters pointed guns at Nile and Bernards' heads and told them NOT to try to sue these people. The guys were shocked of course, but they didn't want no one to get away with the stealing of their song. They contacted their lawyer, who happened to have been working for the mafia earlier, and he actually know these people. He managed to work out a deal with them and Nile and Bernard got paid - half a million dollars ! In cash !!! "Good times" is still a anthem and floorfiller in nightclubs, and many new artists uses samples of either Chic's remarkable basslines or the catchy hooks in their songs. It's probably only James Brown who has been sampled or copied more than Chic and Bernard's basslines.

SO much of all of that stuff flows from very seminal dance/rnb roots. It seems like you can take Computer World era K-werk and the afore mentioned Chic and ilk and find a WHOLE lot of ancestry. A lot of it coalesced in the Soulsonic/CabVolt/John Robie NY scene away back, but those roots came out oft the great dance music of Detroit (and, yes - this is ceratinly arguable, but I don't wish to start that thread). And who (my age, anyway) could forget Stax, JB and the like? Saw Terrence Parker spin last night at the Velvet Lounge and in the midst of an all old skool/classic house set he made a remark about heritage and debts which most people don't know about these days. Amazing set. It was a privelege to be there. Sean Portnoy wrote:

Cripes, you could say the average dj in shops around here doesn't know what sampled something from 3 years ago. The other day I noticed that the new Hawtin 12" (orange cover) had a couple samples of "Oh Yeah" by Yello layered in it and the guys that ran the store didn't even notice... "bah kids these days.... rrrr..nnnn...<grumble>"

Frickin' morons. The whole *point* of the release (which is simply called Orange, I think) id a tribute/homage to "Oh Yeah". How is it, anyway? I haven't heard it yet. Greg

They're ok guys actually, especially running small store and being careful to order experimental/electro/oddball stuff for the few individuals they know that order it. They just don't pick up on the parodys/tributes/puns/tongue-in-cheek-artwork sides of the records.

It is pretty "hard" imo, that is it builds up really solidly and Hawtin is working the samples repetitively the way he'd carve/evolve the sound of his 909+ which gives the samples a more-than-cut-n-paste feel you might imagine and clearly takes on a lot of building energy (esp both tracks of side a). Made for dj'ing (probably goes without saying I suppose) and has a cold-techno rhythm side to it in that there is no funk/breaks/breakdowns but is built up in the Plastikman sensibility. I'm a pretty unbiased Hawtin listenner; liked half of his Plastikman stuff and am not really into his Consumed thing, though I know a lot of atmospheric ambient out there (got the latest 2x12" of Thomas Heckmann and found that more interesting as ambient imho, though more lo-fi or amateur with the reverb depending on how you look at it... but then I listen to Merzbow and Dan Menche as ambient, so...) Since the Hawtin is $6 domestic and a good pressing, I guess I give it a 7 or 8 out of 10. Solenoid

All this Chic talk has got me salivating. I was given 'Dance Dance Dance - The Best Of Chic' for my birthday last month and there isn't a day goes by without me giving it a spin. Sublime. It takes me back to my youth when I was learning to play the guitar. Me and my mates weren't interested in no Van Halen bullshit, we wanted to know what the 4th chord in the Good Times riff was as played by Nile Rodgers. We argued about who could play 'I'm thinking of You' by Sister Sledge best. My all time favourite tho, is Sheila B. Devotion's 'Spacer', that bit where Nile kicks the reverb pedal in and out - awesome! --- Damon Fairclough <damon_fairclough@hotmail.com> wrote:
