I loved the first installment in this series and have been looking forward to number II since seeing news about it in one of Lance's posts. Opening it, I see this is compiled by Burnt Friedman as well, great! Comes with a nice booklet too (as did the first one) with bits about the bands. The tracks on first listen: 1. Jazzanova- Caravelle - the first track starts off in jazzy jungle mode, then goes mad about 1:30 through, jungle beats an infectious bassline and lead. 4:00 in toms and snares take over for a minute or so before the lead comes back in. I like it! 2. Subtle Tease - Overlookingls - 60's style psychedelic English lyrics and pianos to a steady beat apparently of "an old drum made of suitcases"... not my cup of tea 3. Lame Gold (p.s. diacritical mark over the 'e' in 'Lame')- Heartbreak Hotel - an "interpretation of the Elvis song" with a mournful guitar melody and croaking lyrics that remind me of Lou Reed, kinda catchy maybe 4. Tarwater - No More Extra Time - more English lyrics against slow IDM, noisy at times, ho hum 5. Sad Rockets - E.j. - Lounge music IDM, dull 6. Felix Kubin - Bruder Luzifer - a bent childs-toy like melody starts this one off, radio static and distorted high hat percusssion then back some cheesy pads, back comes the bent melody, and back again. Very strange, may take some more listening. 7. Wunder - Noitz's Kakao- orchestral and sad sounding, sweet but uninspiring 8. Lithops - Chobmond - A track from Jan St. Werner, sparse and odd, I think I will have to check out some more of his stuff. 9. Harald "Sack" Ziegler & Frank Shueltge "Blumm" - "Toygrooves" - hmmm, the liner notes describe this as made from samples of various toys "and fat glossy magazines". You wouldn't know it for the most part but I like the result, it gets very strange and driving, like a demented march of electronic doo-dads. 10. Naturalist (Atom Heart) - #12 - "Why don't you simply sit back, relax, and have a coffee?" starts this track, an industrial rythym and an organ lead, distorted "coffee" samples. Wish I could say I was drinking coffee as I heard this... gets very hazy and psychedelic at the end. Hmm ditto my comment for #8! 11. Flanger (Burnt Friedman & Atom Heart) - Music to Begin With, Part 2 - clangs and scronches coalesce into a rythym, a jazzy organ melody comes along to lead the way and gives way to some bubbly squelches for a bit before returning in force with some more conventional percussion. I like the beginning better than the end, but still good 12. Hematic Sunsets - Gaude Mihi - discordant pianos build against a dark driving rythym, various loud orchestral sounds come and go. This was the most striking track so far I'd say. 13 Holosud -Alaune - an interesting, more cheerful and noisy track, almost latin sounding at times, lots of cheesy keyboard sounds. Well, I was starting to wonder with the vocal tracks at the beginning of this. There were some better tracks at the end though. I can't say there was anything that really grabbed me like some of the tracks on the first Deutcsher Funk. Well, they say anything improves with repeated listening, we'll see! Take it easy John

Like John, i was a big fan of the first Deutscher Funk compilation but i was also quite disappointed with this one. The tracks by Lithops, Sack & Blumm, Flanger (which is on the Templates album), and Hematic Sunsets were the better ones but as a whole Deutscher Funk II pales in comparison to Deutscher Funk I - even after repeat listenings. The David Toop - Museum of Fruit cd also on Caipirinha didnt do much for me either. -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

I disagree, disagree, disagree. Time for a review (finally got mine today) V/A Deutscher Funk 02 Caipirinha CAI2023 Where Bernd Friedmann's first selection of German coffeehouse club tracks was focused more on the post-krautrock and experimental side of things, this time he takes on the growing experimental pop and acid jazz scene. Those who were expecting "Son of Deutscher Funk" are of course going to be disappointed; this comp is a different animal altogether aside from the shared geographical origins. We open up with a frenzied acid jazz track with far too many channels of audio to be of any realtion to anything on the first comp- kind of reminds me of Chaser's work on Soma at first. Party down, cappucino drinkers of the world. Then we get to the real shiznit- Subtle Tease's track is one of the most perverse things I've ever heard. Think Silver Apples with a burlesque touch. The rest of the record continues in a similar vein, occasionally venturing into slightly more minimalistic territory but never revisiting the old sonic haunts of Deutscher Funk 1. Proves Friedmann and his Bavarian colleagues are by no means one-trick ponies. If you liked Potuznik's recent album, try this one, too, and vice versa. If there is anything besides country of origin in common between the two D. Funk comps, it'd have to be a rather general kinkiness. Makes me want to make some fuck, berserker. And some more Bernd Friedmann stuff: Flanger: Templates Ntone CD33 What? Huh? Did I say Bernd Friedmann? I believe the guiding light on this record must have been Atom Heart. Bernd Friedmann, whatever his choice of sounds, never really composes music you can call "sparse." This is sparse. Two-bit Acid Jazz all over the place. When Friedmann does whip it out it's pretty obvious, because suddenly everything gets this lush dubby feel and I start enjoying the record. Then it's just back to sad little vamps and organ doodles which I couldn't give two shits about really. God Dammit. I was really looking forward to this one and it's boring. Guess I'll listen to Deutscher Funk 2 again. Or Deutscher Funk 1, for that matter. Or my old Nonplace Urban Field stuff. Hell, it's all pretty much more interesting than this turned out to be. I think this is what happens when you work too hard, Bernd & Uwe. Calm down, release a few less records a year, guys. Look at what happened to Pete Namlook! Hey! We like you too much for that! Tom

I was also mildly disappointed with this compilation. A key feature for me with compilations is whether there are any exclusive tracks by any of the artists and in this case, at least for the "key" artists its all stuff that has been already released. Save your money and buy the Senking Ping 12" and the 20 to 2000 CD-they kick some serious ass! wkm
