i think you just answered your own question there.it's always about the new wave. and always has been. the the one true thing about IDM: as opposed to other genres (especially within electronic music), you can't get away with releasing material that has been done before. think house, rock, drum'n'bass, hiphop etc. it's all so watered down. but you'll know IDM is heading in the wrong direction when it starts to sound to fimiliar. tomas

So it's a problem either way: You change, people want Incunabula part 8 You stay the same, people say you're stale. So basically, IDM has a lot of finnicky fans. And whoever doesn't like something is more vocal. Cos praise often comes in the form of "me too"s, which people don't send cos they add no content, like most of my posts.

at least someone got the point of my message, most people just replied saying "yeah that new music sucks", i had thought that the second part of the message enforced the idea that the first part was SARCASTIC, but i'm no literary scholar, nonetheless to reiterate, all music inevitably goes through evolution, its happening now in "hip-hop"(on a side note: which is evolving strangely towards electronic music, take some of the vocals out of some of these songs and there straight warp/ae ripoffs, but i digress) the music changes over time, and its tradition for the "old schoolers" to get angry and complain. Im not saying this new idm is not bad(god knows i havent heard it), but with a degree in philosophy i feel compelled to step in and argue the principles/logic of this whole thing. Another funny little hipocrisy is the complaining about the new schema/ci stuff being bad and then the striking realization that this new music is actually old stuff just finally getting released, so once again let me get this straight, you love the old schema/ci, but you dont like when they issue more of the old stuff? but yet when ae/plaid actually do some innovation on there style its bad as well? *the soap opera that is IDM* dj.merck(i should probably just go to sleep and let you all have your ahhh yes, another decent reply just in from Moonlight "You change, people want Incunabula part 8 You stay the same, people say you're stale." nicely put. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tomas Jirku <tomas@yirku.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 1999 10:55 PM Subject: Re: (idm) new music sucks?

I don't think it's all that straight-- to be honest I'm pretty excited that the hip hop scene has breathed some life into some musical areas which have piles of current IDMers gazing deep into their own body cavities. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first time hip hop's been exciting since "Nation of Millions". As far as IDM sucking: it's just done growed up. It's no longer a small group of innovators blazing their own trails. There are now IDM conventions, just like rock conventions or jazz conventions, which means scads of imitators. The thing somebody said about IDM requiring innovation by its very nature I can't agree with-- it's just that in the first 5-10 years of a musical type/form (which IDM is arguably in, despite whatever direct lineage claims some want to make), things are wide open. They aren't quite as wide open anymore-- there's inward pressure from so-called "purists" (read: murderers) and foxes-by-nature who've just stayed in their holes to long when they should have jumped ship, who now complain about the lack of innovation. If you're too old to start over, sorry. Music buying always outstrips innovation if you channel yourself into only one area. So it goes. Ten years from now there'll be ultra-hip retro idmers quoting ae and afx as collective childhood memories. M. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.
