Yeah, and there IS meat in a White Castle slider! ;) I think Martin did an excellent job stating what I wanted to hear, so I'll leave it at that. Check out _3 Cornered Room_ and then try to say Autechre has the "hip hop sound". You'll gag on the inaccuracies. For a review of what started the scene and defined hip hop and "B-boy" check out _B-Boys Revenge_, mixed together by the Scratch Perverts. Might teach the suburbanite to stop recklessly attaching the term hip hop to all downtempo tracks. The new Super_Collider delivers the funk though, to a faithful and good degree. Though funk is not hip hop, however their release is quite a good and varied mix.

year ? WHEE! Spymania Allstars one is quite dated in sound these days, but still holds a special spot in my record collection. Right next to Noodles _Death of Cool_ comp. NP--Aristide Massaccesi. Better known as DJ Entox, this boy watches BET and enjoys Spice Girls, but you wouldn't call these sounds commercial or R'n'B. ;) --- Peace Hugs and Unity Jason J. Tar W. W. J. D? I don't know about a hip-hop *influence*, but I've noticed several tracks that have hip-hop style beats... The first track on Envane A few tracks off of Tri-Repetae and the third track off of a single (name escapes me) that was released maybe a year and a half ago that sounded like autechre gone slow R&B -Ma'er...

I thought it was common knowledge that Autechre were just a bunch of b-boys at heart? The influence might be a bit more audible on the Gescom projects (especially Gescom 2, SKA003).... but it's definitely the soul of most Autechre releases... Aaron np: LSG - Into Deep (Superstition)

check out "goz quarter" from envane. if that doesn't have hip hop influences written all over it (and not just the dr octagon sample), then call me helen keller. or maybe I just don't know what a hip hop vibe is. em.

Ya'll always miss the point of things by trying to say, "it's one thing", or "it's another thing". Autechre has a distinct hip-hop influence to these ears (which have been listening to real honest-to-goodness hip-hop for years). Check the tried by 12 remix or "Goz quarter" for evidence. Obviously it's not everything to them, though. I don't hear a lick of hip-hop soul in the noisy interludes on LP5 or the Gescom MiniDisc. But that's OK, they are a multi-faceted group. For the record, I dropped both the hip-hop side (tried by 12 remix; a slice of vocal garbled-yet-discernable heaven) and the non-hip-hop side (various artists no.9 remix; a slice of grungy 4-to-the-floor techno heaven) last night on www.detroitpeoplemover.com - check it out. Unfortunately the tried by 12 mix isn't in there, but the various artists is. have you ever heard ae's "goz quarter" or "ccec"? you'd think that hiphop has been around long enough to encompass quite a large range of styles within the genre. if you consider that crap that's coming out these days is still considered hiphop, i'm sure hiphop does not need to be defined so rigidly. damn, this might as well be a fricken "who's IDM" thread. tomas

I think the problem here is the lack of differentiation between having a hip-hop influence and wearing it on your sleeve. You can listen and take notice of some of the textures created by hip-hop's arrangements and put them in your work, and this is not limited to putting BUM BUM A-CHUKK beats under everything. I like BUM BUM A-CHUKK, it's hip-hop's easiest identifiable trait, but there are lots of others that people have learned from that I think some are ignoring. So in summary: Hip Hop FEEL and Hip Hop INFLUENCE are not the same thing. I think this topic's bus is here. Tom
