I have discovered the ultimate "IDM". Benzodiazepines - sort of a combination anti-anxiety and tranquilizer psychopharmacological concoction - create a very interesting mind state. Imagine the effects of alcohol without the sensory deprivation that normally occurs. When you are the only person awake the sounds around disseminate into a wash of mechanical subtleties which you interact with by whichever means you choose. Currently I am typing on the keyboard of my laptop producing an oddly rhythmic accompaniment to the drone of the boilers downstairs and the A/C by the window. My roommate is snoring in duet with the fridge. All of this together, amplified by heightened sensitivity due to sleep-dep and my techno-addict mindset, is absolutely amazing. Contrivances of musical structure begone - anybody who pays money for found sound recordings needs to wake up and hear the music, so to speak. (hey, if people can talk about weed as a musical expense on this list, I can ramble on about this, can't I?) Relate similar experiences, chemically aided or otherwise. Oh Gawd... Benzies. There was some 70's book?? that kept going on about these... and I know that my mother used to have an inhaler for nasal congestion that was taken off the market, because apparently kids were breaking the plastic container and ingesting the interior stick which contained that above ingredient. sounds like a rad track man....where can i buy it? ;) you sure you need this drug to appreciate it tho? i agree however that sleep deprivation is an excellent way to trip out.

Never mind, I'm sure Tom is snoozing by now :) Probably won't remember anything in the morning. The best is making a tape on V's and then checking it out the next day! ha ha, the simple joys of youth. And now some reviews that might be of interest... Organised Noise - Various Artists comp CDR I've wanted to check out this label since seeing some reviews, and this compilation has not disappointed me! In fact it's about the perfect techno record for me... straight-ahead but not too minimal, soulful at times but not campy, sharp and noisy at times. I've been listening to it straight through for a few days, definitely a great record for the summer! My only complaint... doesn't play on the walkman thing I've pressed into service for cd-ing, makes it say "Sorry!" Well, time for a real cd deck I guess. Standout tracks include a bemused sounding number from MArkus Miller, "Routine Blur," a noisy drummy track from Lucas Rodenbush "Sliver" and especially a warpy clanky one from Twerk, "Conveyor Belt." Enough adjectives for ya? Pick it up! Auto Repeat - The Unbearable Lightness of Autorepeating CD - SSR Maybe this ain't much news to those on this list (it's a comp of records from 94-97 put out in 98, by Elin from Austria by the way) but thought it's worth a mention. I wouldn't ordinarily buy an album of "disco-house" but when I see something advertised as "the most warped record we've heard in months" I get to thinking. Well here's to truth in advertising. If "warped disco-house" is your thing, this is for you! I haven't even gotten to the remixes yet (from DJ sneak, paul Johnson, Sluts 'n' strings and 909 and Carl Craig.) Take it easy John
