Photek does have a compilation coming out soon. I'll see if I can dig up the info. I think it's mostly his material but I do remember Digital & Spirit were involved to some extent. I'll try and get the info He also has a remix of "Inta" on a Prototype dbl pack. Bailey [Metalheadz] rinsed it the last time I saw him, great tune. I believe there is also a new 12"/CDS 'Terminus', scheduled for release in August on Photek Productions, but I think we can assume that this release date will move! :) (well they have only just updated the productions website from saying it was going live in January 1999!) - -- dan@madvision.co.uk www.madvision.co.uk [PGP signature removed] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't think you can really judge the state of a genre based on one artist. Photek has done several non-drum n bass tunes in the past. Check out Traenon or whatever the single was on Op-Art. Some nice techno stuff from him on there, and then there are many trip hop type tunes here and there

I don't think I have bought any SF stuff since Sharp Scientific - Magnetic EP.

As usual drum n bass is going in every direction. Marcus Intalex and Doc Scott have done some housier drum n bass. Apparently, J Majik has a housey dnb tune called 'Love Is Not A Game'. Then you have the 'Borg Metal Fraternity' (as Dillinja puts it) doing hard drum n bass. People like Bad Company, Ed Rush & Optical. Sort of getting more techno-ish. There's a lot of old skool influences coming back. Digital has been dropping some ragga-ish samples. Digital & Spirit will drop some great tunes this year. Classic '92 hardcore sounds and breaks are being looked at again. Not too fond of some of that stuff. You know Dillinja's lp are going to have some hard amens with deep bass. The Good Looking crew stays pretty much on the same path. Total Science has been doing some killer tunes. Everything from downtempo to techno sounding dnb, to old skool. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Mail ? oh, i'm not trying to suggest based on Photek that all dnb is dead. i do think, though, he fits into a wider "reassessment" of the genre and its various directions...

there's a hell of a lot going on here - not that i really follow it - but i know that, in addition to the harder records coming out on Green, etc., some mainstay DJs are doing a lot more non-d'n'b sets. anyone interested in the current state of d'n'b should check the new (forthcoming) issue of XLR8R, with a cover story on "defiant drumz" - a sort of state of the art. in terms of SF, the phunkatech crew is profiled, but there's a heavy UK focus to the article. cheers- phil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There was a good interview with Photek in Jockey Slut a short while back. He did sound like he was turned off by the "heavy metal" drum n bass. He and Peshay still seemed pretty excited about making drum n bass. I haven't seen anything to show any other genres that are sprouting any new found revitalization. I think everything is cyclical, there are periods where there are a lot of amazing releases and then there are periods where there aren't that many. I still find way more dnb in the shops I want to buy over other genres.

I'm pretty familiar with a lot of SF dnb, I just don't buy any. There's a guy name Calibre from there (actually he move there from Ireland) that is suppose to be promising. I didn't like his first release on Green, but I'm interested in hearing other releases from him.

I prefer to see what's happening in London, Brighton, and Bristol. I also just heard some amazing tunes from Pieter K (LA). I was pretty blown away by his latest batch of tunes. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Mail ? marcus intalex seems to be writing some amazing stuff at the moment. way you make me feel on 31 records is one of my favourites at the moment. does anyone know who the remix of liquid fingers is by? - that's so sublime!

i heard bad company recently, they thrashed this sort of sound and it wasn't really my bag - apparently they are releasing a 'back to old school' album soon. anyway, there's only a certain amount of times that you can hear 'dominator' or a remix of it before it gets tired. on the up side, bailey played here last weekend and help restore my faith in drum and bass. dave. ---- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually the flip 'Neptune' is what I like. I'm looking forward to 'Universe' on Metalheadz. If you haven't heard the Marcus Intalex remix of Solid State - Just A Vision [Renegade] you'll like that alot.

I personally hated that tune. I hate that "Jack's Got A Groove" sample, and I have been hearing it in shite house tunes since '90. I believe I heard Goldie did the remix.

Agreed!!!!! I'm looking forward to everything they are involved in, especially the Photek Production Comp.

I haven't heard about that, but they have 'Digital Nation' out soon. There is a track called 'Breathe' that is super catchy, probably their best tune ever. I've heard one other tune that I thought was great, but I don't know the name of it. When I saw Bad Company a year ago they did play some old skool sounding stuff. Some breaks with chipmunk sounds...wasn't into it.

Agreed, I heard enough of those sounds in 92-93.

cheers - just a vision is great. i just checked out at few tracks at the drum and bass arena (for those that don't know its an excellent resource at www.breakbeat.co.uk) and found that the track bailey started with was another marcus intalex mix - mj cole - sincere, which was by far my favourite track of the night.

I sorta like their recorded stuff, and I thought I'd check 'em out, especially with the hype they were getting on the list the week previous. The show was decent, but I don't understand why so many people on this list were so big on them. They hardly used any electronics. Accordian, cello, drums, guitar, bass, assorted plastic toy breath-controlled keyboards. In a live context, the music has more of a goth/darkwave appeal than anything else. The girls seemed very unsure of their vocal abilities, although that very easily could've been a monitor/mixing thing.

i just got back from their show here in vancouver. i was amazed... and it wasn't like they made much use of the live music context. the music itself just ate people right up. i didn't expect the combination of accordians and idm rhythms to work so well, but everything was in exquisite balance. and the fizzy-pop solos ruled. :) __michal On Tue, Aug 13, 2002 at 01:01:10PM -0700, Albers, Brian wrote:

D&B?s golden boy Photek has pulled out the first new material under his Special Forces alias since the ?Lethal Volume 2? EP in early 2001. It comes in the form of a double pack of 12-inch single separates to be released simultaneously in late September on his own imprint Photek Records (previously Photek Productions). Now based in LA, rumour has it Photek?s been hanging out with the Hollywood elite!? Once again drawing on the complex layers, offset loops and meaty, organic sounds synonymous with the Special Forces sound, Mr Parkes turns in four blinding tracks. To add a little flavour to the proceedings he?s once again called in a favour from legendary house vocalist Robert Owens, who featured on 2000?s ?Solaris? album - he guests on track, ?The End?.? It comes in the form of a double pack of 12-inch single separates to be released simultaneously in late September on his own imprint Photek Records (previously Photek Productions). Now based in LA, rumour has it Photek’s been hanging out with the Hollywood elite!  Once again drawing on the complex layers, offset loops and meaty, organic sounds synonymous with the Special Forces sound, Mr Parkes turns in four blinding tracks. To add a little flavour to the proceedings he’s once again called in a favour from legendary house vocalist Robert Owens, who featured on 2000’s ‘Solaris’ album - he guests on track, ‘The End’.  Taken from http://www.burntblue.com/news/news.asp?News=2754 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
