What are these guys like? I just realized the other day that these guys did the title track of "Synthetic Fury" with DJ Spooky. That song's real heavy drum and bass, but not really drillish, right? Panacea like that regularly? np: Rubberoom "Architechnology" I did not know hip hop could get this dark and scary. Scarier than Ae's "TearTear" if its video was "Come to Daddy." Scene in Modulations that made me laugh out loud (maybe aided by the fact that I understood his original German without having to wait for the subtitles) but he was finding it hard to express what he wanted to say - basically using rubbish bins for drums and just THRASHING the hell out of them. Hard D N' B techstep mostly. Both "Twisted Designz" and "Low Profile Darkness" are discs worth checking out. He just did a disc with a Japanese female singer and it kinda goes off on some tangents that I don't think really work that well. I used to think so - check out the isert into _Position Chrome Retrospective_ (PC 36 - 1999), it looks like he's seriously thinned out. Speaking of said comp, it's pretty good. Like all dNb comps it has its shortcomings, but is just angry enough to hold my (driving) interest. His release _Hanayo in Panacea_ (I believe) isn't all that bad. But it's not nearly as good as _Low Profile Darkness_. Anyway, his stuff is far superior to anything Nico, Trace, Fierce, and Ed Rush have put out. no-one mentioned "twisted designz" yet! came out last year on The Music Cartel/force inc./position chrome. another mix of downtempo and DnB with some harsh ambience thrown in as well. "anti funk" is a track for all those that love his Low Profile Darkness album. and you can't go wrong with the menacing vocoder bassline of "hedonist remix". just don't let the awful album artwork scare you away. on the other hand: panacea vs. hanayo has a damn cool cover! tomas np: monolake - hongkong

i saw him play in NYC in mid april with dj spooky and he's not fat .... .... but that's not the point of me writing, i wanted to know why he was received so badly... he didn't play a *bad* set at all.... but there was just very little response, and at one stage he stopped playing and called out something unintelligible to most along the lines of 'what's the f***g problem?!' ....... was it a bad night, or does new york city (or the us?) just not get what he does??? definitely a lot of people dancing to his set were looking real conscious and awkward.... it wasn't till most had left and the 10 or so remaining were going hard out that things started feeling right (though empty).

Well, most of them were probably there for the headliner, that subliminal kid. So they probably didn't know exactly what to do with a techstep set; The New Yorkers who would've showed you what was up are the ones I saw one night last year at CBGB's slamming around to Alec Empire, Bomb 20, CDB and Merzbow at the DHR CMJ showcase. Fuck me, it was ridiculous. Most of the folks I've met at other shows in NY (e.g. the phoenicia show, with more live PA's than you can shake a stick at, last summer) are all far too absorbed in weed or other drugs and passing the word around about how cool so-and-so is to get down and dance. No slam on NYers, though, in my experience America is more or less the same all over with respect to dancing acumen at these sort of shows- I think it's the pants. Tom
