(idm) REVIEW: Oval "Szenariodisk"

More Reviews (for those who give a damn) Oval "Szenariodisk" (Thrill Jockey) Markus Popp, aka Oval, describes this as “the first Oval R & B record”. Comprised of six tracks from his limited Aero Deko and Szenario 12 inch releases, (plus five bonus tracks) Szenariodisk is the final installement in this three part series. As to be expected of Popp’s work, layers of rich digital fuzz and tone form the foundation while CD-skipping styed sounds, pops and burps lay down the rhythm. But despite the predictability of Oval’s sound, what draws me to this record for repeated listens is the quaintness of the music. In a way, “to the point”, each song rides between the one to four minute mark, never exceding the point of bordom. On top of that, I find each track to be in one way or another, interesting. Were label mate Nobukazu Takemura’s Scope is similar in sound and concept, but at times a bit drawn out, Szenariodisk keeps the flow going in an upbeat manner… well, “upbeat” the only way Oval could possibly be. I would say Popp description of this as his first “R & B record” as not being far off, but I think a better desciption would be it being more of a “pop record” then anything else (pardon the irony). 8/10 -LtDS out now: e.x.p. issue B featuring interviews with: O.S.T/Rook Valard D'Archangelo Phthalo Records MixMaster Morris Neotropic Low Res Dave Clarke contact expzine@aol.com for further inquiries
