this is something i've been thinking for some time: I don't understand how someone can say 'well, they screwed up big time this album, but they learned from their mistakes and got it right for this one'. as far as i'm concerned, a great musician/artist doesn't just suddenly forget how to make the stuff and then remember. it is an ongoing process of mutation (ooh doesn't that sound scary) as they learn more and more and get tired of old tricks. but this is probably just me... when i find a musician whose style i'm into, i generally end up being into nearly all of his music. chris === _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I think that artists often "lose the plot" from one piece of work to the next. I know I do- I'll be in a zone one day or one weekend and make some fascinating shit, then later I can't seem to find the hole in my ass much less a worthwhile sound/pattern. I can also very easily see this happening on an album-to-album basis, knowing the way a lot of people work. I don't play with concepts, so my stuff is on strictly a track-by-track basis, but for people who do I can see where somebody might totally go into wank-land for 74 minutes' worth of stuff before coming back down to earth. And not only that, but i've heard it happen. Everybody go take a listen to the first half of 4 Hero's "Two Pages". Tom

but there's a different between having "composer's block" / whipping up some wankcakes and actually releasing the stuff. i do know about that zone you speak of--when things are on a roll. personally i dont track anything when i'm not in the mood to get something good done. well sometimes i do but i never finish it if i know it's starting to turn to shitlo.. most people pick from loads (even a ton, in afx's case, so he says) of tracks they are satisfied with to make an album or an EP.. i don't think autechre would release something they don't believe they put 100.0% effort into (grammar...bad.. lazy). bye chris --- Tom Millar <tmillar@utkux.utcc.utk.edu> wrote:
