On Saturday night I was at a friend's (admittedly there were some pretty lethal cocktails being served) when some music came on that I KNEW I knew. Next track : even more familiar, but still not a clue what we were listening to. Next track... and I wandered off to the bedroom to check the stereo - only to be confronted by my own handwriting and the tracklisting for Plaid's Not for Three's which I had given him a copy of. Oh Dear. Also the mix tapes I make for myself - I'll be listening to stuff on the walkman, really love the track, but if you put a gun to my head, I wouldn't be able to tell you what we were listening to, even though this is stuff that I possess, that I obviously enjoy - but there's just too damn much to keep track of it all. I find myself running back to the cover to check what it is, because I live in a state of bother till I find out. {sigh} I * np : KLF - The White Room album (guess I'd recognise this if it came on the radio!)

yes! yes! totally! but there's nothing worse than finding those unlabeled/unannotated tapes that you'd made at earlier stages of your collection, listening to them, and realizing - shock! horror! - that you have absolutely no idea what you're hearing. and how 'bout the thoughts of "wow, this is amazing. i've really got to buy this!" that hit you - first as you're relistening to a mix tape you just made for a friend - then if/when you're with them as they play it. i'm still convinced that making such tapes is the only way to really appreciate the music you own. everything sounds better coming out of someone else's car stereo. mr. e. np: arsonists: what it all boils down to (matador)

IT happens!! call it mental block/amnesia. i swear i need a kick in the head whenever i hear a dj dropping some phat beats that sounded *too* familiar and i'm racking my brain trying to come up with the track title. worst case scenario: feel like a big time loser the moment the track title exposes itself in-yer-face, damn... somewhere in time i'd been maiming that tune til i got sick of it ;-) did i feel enlightened or what???! yonnie

Yeah, it happens to me too, but I thought I'd just tell you my brothers experience. He was round my house and we were fiddling around with my synth and computer and stuff. I tapped in a little tune, and he's like, "what was that? I've heard that before somewhere, I'm sure I have. What is it, Aphex? Autechre?". He spends the next couple of minues trying to remember what the tune is, and playing it again on the synth. I then loaded up the whole song and played a bit of it, and he was looking impressed, saying "wow, have you reproduced that entire song?" Then I reminded him that it was *my* track, and I'd sent him the mp3 a couple of days before! :) Nice to be mistaken for Aphex Twin or Autechre though! Eddie
