Hmmm...you're welcome to your opinion, but in the UK, you can't have a live set of drum&bass without an MC -- it would be like drinking tea without milk! MC's in drum & bass come out of the Hip Hop/Dance Hall MC tradition. Part of the reason that dancefloor style drum and bass has long sections of just bassline and snares is to leave room for the MC to do his thing. A good drum and bass MC knows how to hype the crowd, and when to shut up. An MC that toasts over a vocal should get the gong. An MC that can't come up with original freestyles likewise. While there are a few good MCs in the US, for the most part they are kids imitating what they hear on tapes from the UK. And as Mark Twain said, "It's better to remain silent and appear a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Yeah 90% of the MC's I've heard should not be on the mic. But get LTJ Bukem/Conrad/DRS Progressions Sessions #3. Best mc'ing I've ever heard on a dnb mix. It's probably rehearsed but I don't care. it's tight. Kevin On Sun, 6 Jun 1999, dj.merck wrote:

just alittle concern, as far as the "jungle"/dnb vocal tip... im not one to really be into vocals anyways, basically because i like your basic electronic music with samples of willy wonka(aphex twin), ll cool j(plug), and where ever the sample "a juicy red apple is nice but not all apples are red(skin up)...my point is, theres only a few select artist that actually make vocals sound good on top of any format exp. lamb, etc. so, im a fraid to say, wake up and smell the coffee, if dnb has gone full out vocal sister girlfriend style, dont you think its about time to either write your own stuff or listen to old records? not to be a dick, but hey.... for all you that hate what people list what thier listening too.... on the one and two, fourlaum....

Yeah, I'll second that - while they may not go quite as well with all the generic 2-step that's out at the moment, they definitely add something to the older stuff. Mind you, I remember going to this night about 3-4 years ago which had some fat bloke sitting on a chair with a mike going 'get up...get up...get up' over and over again. Experiences like that can really put you off. Strangely enough, there's a Roni Size Vs Redman d&b vocal track out at the moment that's actually pretty good. It's also got to be the only d&b tune I've heard for years that clocks in at under 4 minutes.

I always thought that was Lisa Simpson. On a completely unrelated note, what with everyone talking about piloerection recently, has anyone noticed the opposite feeling, where a song is so bad it makes you cringe, grit your teeth and feel cold all over? It happened to me recently hearing that fucking Ooh La La song of the Budweiser advert. A Previous culprit (and one that never failed to give me the same response) was Tubthumping by Chumbabwamba. Dan Shoebridge. np: ColdKrushKuts

Errr... who has released an amen track in the last year? Sometimes after an hr of 2 step i'm ready for some amen break action. Maybe it's well played out, but in my opinion, there's no more hectic beat out there.

Heh, ask if.then.else. :) Sparklehorse are a basic pop group with a country tinge, I think they're excellent because they write songs like "Some Day I Will Treat You Good". "Pig" and "Sick of Goodbyes" on the new album are good. Still, I can see how people who even like pop music wouldn't like what they do.

Tons of people. Dillinja, Lemon D, Dom&Roland, Decoder, Tech Itch, Trace, John B... There's even a recent ram track that has isolated drum hits taken from the amen to make up their own break. I saw dom play last night and he rolled out 5 or 6 of his new tunes on plate that were all massive amen floor smashers. The Amen is still alive and kick'n! peace out, brock ps. Check the new Tech Itch LP, 'Diagnostics'!

I'm probably just a square, but i don't think i know this (although i've heard it referred to). Could anyone point me to something in readily accessible that would have this? Ok, it's about 140-160 bpm and it goes something like this: "thud-thud-bang-thud-bang-thud-bang-thud-bang-b-b-bang" Of course, there are about 10,000 different variations too. Just make your own with a copy of SoundForge. -andrew

http://avalon.net/~kent/music/amen/ Ask and ye shall receive! Oh, and for you musicians out there, this is a copy of the amen break that I spent some time tweaking out to sound really nice. God bless dsp...Not only that it's stretched to 160bpm, and padded out to 3 even measures, if you have Sonic Foundry's Acid.

Umm, not exactly. The "Amen" is a specific breakbeat taken from a Winston Brothers song. It's been a mainstay in d-n-b since it was called "hardcore". Ray Keith is/was a big user of it. u spoke it all. a good couple of dnb dj and mc is terrific.. here in sao paulo, we have dj Marky and mc Kontrol. i also think the combination couldn't be better, cause Kontrol is from England. actually, maybe this mixture has made dnb so popular at this moment in our country. kp bio
