hi all, there don't seem to be masses of London.UK-based people on the idm mailing-list, which is a shame - but for anyone who is there, should point out there's an especially tasty Rephlex gig this Friday at the gorgeous new Scala venue near King's Cross. It consists of Aphex Twin, Mike Dred, Luke Vibert DJ-ing, and DMX Krew, Cylob, D'Arcangelo, Bogdan, and Ovuca live.Anyway, I should be going and I'll try to give everyone a gig review. On a related note, anyone else heard the new Bogdan Raczynski album, "Samurai Math Beats" on Rephlex? I just checked it out, not bad at all, if even weirder than "Boku Mo Wakaran". Lots more weird singing a la Aphex 'Milkman' but slightly more strangulated. Sorry to say, but I do find it a bit derivative, tho - in that it's the sort of thing you'd _expect_ Rephlex to bring out, whereas the new D'Arcangelo album I thought was rather cool and much more unexpected. regards, h0l/simon (http://www.mono211.com - mono211/monotonik)

the same crew (except for the last 3) played in cologne in january, and i can't say i was blown away. arrived when ed dmx was playing, which was quite nice though he didn't really get the crowd rocking. we had apparently missed cylob. then luke vibert came on, spinning techstep as i mentioned in a previous post, and no doubt he was very good - but come to think of it, you can hear equally good d&b djs with the same records at least 2 nights each week here if you want to. from then on it went straight downhill. no one was visible on the stage for a good hour and it looked like if the mighty rephlex allstars had put an aphex twin cd on and left. every once in a while an invisible someone would yell "rrrreeeeephlex in da house!" over the pa. then the lights went off, went on again, and, still no one on the stage, the music changed to fucked up noises. most people were leaving. we moved towards the stage to see what the fuck was happening. word spread that mike dred was sitting inside of this 10x5 ft wooden box that was placed on the stage and that the aphex twin had done the same before him. my friend crawled on the box and looked over the rim to see for herself, and yes, there was an apparent mike dred playing on his computer. shortly after midnight, the noises stopped and they kicked everyone out. maybe they thought of this as an artistic statement or something. i thought it was fucking bullshit. i guess i'm lucky that i at least got to *hear* rdj, because the last two times he was scheduled to play in cologne he pulled a last-minute no-show when you had already paid to get in. hope the london night is gonna be better. cheers, tom
