I would have to disagree with that. Tortoise is a dynamic band which at times has more in common with jazz than rock. When I think drone rock, I think bowery electric. -daniel Head Monkey Mad Monkey Records http://monkey.eliteware.com On Sun, 6 Jun 1999, [ISO-8859-1] ..:?? .??:: .?:. wrote:

You know, when I think drone rock, I think of (the mighty) SPACEMEN 3, but I agree with Daniel's statement, even though I've found that it's useless to use the word 'jazz' to describe any music at all (even jazz) since the person you're talking to will nod vacantly and say "Oh, cool" not realizing that what you mean by comparing it to jazz is that there are serious improvisational elements and/or crazy changes or whatever. What does "jazz" mean anymore anyway? At least when you say "I like drillnbass" or "I like homoerotic Art-Rock" people aren't going to think that you like Dave Koz or something. My new policy is to just describe bands as "good" or "bad", and in Tortise falls in the "good" catagory. I hope that helps. :) .Bil. IAMaCOPIER np:Yusef Lateef:Hush 'n' Thunder

Another good example (IMO) is Windy & Carl (a lot of their stuff anyway), although it's not the same kind of drone as Bowery Electric. :) Jeff
