Has anyone heard Gershon Kingsley's new version of popcorn which was done entirely on a Roland Groovebox? (MC-505) It's on this awesome (idea for a compilation) on Grand Royal. They gave one of these "techno grooveboxes" to some artists to see what they could do with it. Included are Jean Jacques Perrey, Buffalo Daughter, John McEntire, Air, Pavement, Money Mark, Beck, Sean Lennon, Gershon Kingsley, SOnic Youth, Bis, Cibo Matto, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Dick Hyman. Tracks are hit and miss (the Air one is GREAT if you like Air), but it's interesting to see what different routes these artists take with the constraint of equipment which is target-marketed towards the 4 to the floor crowd. The name of the comp is "At Home With The Groovebox" in case anyone is interested. At 09:03 AM 4/24/2000 -0700, you wrote:

yeah ive heard this and its really nice. grand royal wasnt the first to do a compilation in this style though. the first (that i know of) is called "groovebox experience" which came out on distance in 97. same concept as "at home..." but with the mc-303. its got technossomy and scan x contributions among others... btw: i got a 3xcd compilation called "ohm: the early gurus of electronic music" tonight. i havent listened to it yet as i just got home but it looks like its going to be great. like i said its got 3 cds with 43 artists from 1948 to 1980 plus a 90+ page booklet with interviews/bios and some nice sturdy packaging. also: about a month ago i bought a cd/book by carsten nicolai called "polyfoto". really nice art and essays along with a 20 minute disc similar in looks to the '20 to 2000 series. i had no idea carsten nicolai was also into visual art. im very impressed with everything ive heard and seen by him. what else should i look for? matt on now: steve roden- crop circles. -------- www.spaceistheplace.org/ambientmafia On Mon, 24 Apr 2000 23:19:05 -0400 Bill Wright <wwright@clemson.edu> writes:

If you like the Polyfoto ep check out Noto's 20' to 2000 contribution or his recent Empty Garden cdep. I dont have the new Alva Noto cd on Mille Plateaux but I hear that is excellent as well. Noto's Infinity - endless loops editiion 2x10" is quite fun featuring nothing but over 100 lock grooves that were used to compose his Infinity cd. Finally his Kerne is a nice, but somewhat quieter journey into the Noto digital landscapes that you are just starting to discover. Other Noto releases of note: . Noto: spin cd (Rastermusic) . Noto: infinity cd (Noton) . Noto: infinity - endless loops edition lock groove 2x10" (Noton) . Ø + Noto: mikro makro cd/2x10" (Rastermusic) . Noto: kerne cd (Plate Lunch) . Noto: 20' to 2000 - #9 cd (Rastermusic) . Noto: empty garden - inside.out cd (A1/Rastermusic) . Alva Noto: prototypes cd (Mille Plateaux) Comp appearances: . Microscopic Sounc comp cd (Caipirinha) .
