The original intention of the "np" business, from memory, was so that if that was something you hadn't heard about, or was curious about, you could write to the person (or the list, as has happened several times, starting new threads) and enquire about it. If people are wanky they might be wanky about it. If people are competitive they might be competitive about it. Whatever. Why do I like seeing what others are listening to? A couple of reasons: -helps get some sort of idea about that person's tastes in general, which helps form an idea about where that person is coming from in making comments to the list. If I see that you primarily listen to Skam/Warp/Aphex/Autechre, I understand that you may not have been exposed to Carl Craig, for example. -helps get an idea of what sort of mood the person's in at the moment. Listening to Joy Division or something probably puts you in a completely different mindstate than listening to a rave compilation from 1993. -some listmembers use it for bragging rights, of course, but by that token, I get to see what's coming up. -it adds a little grounding to what is otherwise a pretty ephemeral thing. that is, I know about 10 IDM listmembers who I've met in the flesh. having small cues as to what's happening in the real world of the other 488 I haven't met (or whatever) helps make the community seem more real. Sorry to reply with a bitchy response myself, but I fired it off without thinking much.
