it seems like someone over there at alternative press knows something. not only did they mention grooves magazine as one of their recommended picks, they also included the mad monkey comp as well as the 4mod3 on phthalo on their top whatever list in the bpm section. if the person that is writing this stuff for a.p. is on the list, write me, i've got some questions for you. .. brian rachielles http://www.rain.org/~audio http://www.mp3.com/~pointb audio/kcsb, grooves, 11hz

Brian: um, re: the Top 20 in the BPM section in the July 99 issue of AP--that's my chart ("chart supplied by Andrew Duke from Cognition..."). That's twice AP have published a chart from me in less than a year so they must be doing something right, eh? ;) Anyway, Dave Segal from AP just joined the IDM list recently and he's the one who asked to publish my chart on both occasions, so I'm assuming he's the one that has asked the others as well--charts from Gregory from Suction Records, Allen Avanessian @ Plug Research Records, and others in the IDM community have recently been featured in the BPM section, plus they've been doing that for awhile. (Perhaps Dave Segal can fill us in on more...) I've included the chart AP just used below. It's the chart that accompanies the April 99 Cognition Electronics Report (published in print in VICE mag--a free mag distributed across Canada and the US-- as the "Electric Independence" column; though with a shorter column and only a top ten due to wordcount/space restrictions). [IDM: this is the chart that Brian is referring to:] Cognition's April 99 Electronics Top 20 (compiled by Andrew Duke 1 March 99) 1. Various--"Pangaea Volume 2" CD (UK Pagoda CDR) 2. Various--"Voices In My Lunch Box Vol. 1" EP (US Plug Research test) 3. Jason Hogans-"Peter And The Rooster" EP (US Planet E test) 4. Various--"Enter The Monkey" CD (US Mad Monkey CDR) 5. Albrecht Kunze--"Testarchiv" 2 X LP (DM Disko B) 6. Various--"Endpoint compilation 01" 2 X LP (US Endpoint) 7. Various-"Marconi Point" CD (UK Iris Light) 8. Bogdan Raczynski--"Boku Mo Wakaran" 3 X LP (UK Rephlex) 9. Funki Porcini--"The Ultimately Empty Million Pounds" 2 X LP (CAN/UK Ninja Tune) 10. 4Mod3-"A Translation Of Simplicity" CD (US Phthalo CDR) 11. Various--"Convergence" EP (US OM) 12. Various-"Source Material" CD (FR Source/US Astralwerks) 13. Various-"No Categories 2" 2 X CD (US Ubiquity) 14. Various--"Radio Utopia 1999: Millenium Funk" CD (YU Radio B92 CDR) 15. Super_Collider--"It Won't Be Long"/"Take Me Home" (remixes) 2 X 12" (UK Loaded promo) 16. Various--"Reich Remixed" EP (US Nonesuch promo) 17. Marina--"Marina" CD (US Dial) 18. D'Arcangelo/Solvent--"Diagram 9"/"Feeling No. 4" 7" (CAN Suction) 19. Tom B.-"Stomper" 12" (US Intelligent) 20. Various-"Asphodelic" CD (US Asphodel) Thanks. Andrew :) "brian r." wrote:

heh when I was much younger I used to read the mag (before it moved to a glossy format). Back then it was a good source for industrial music info. This was when wax trax was not owned by TVT and new beat had first come onto the scene. I remember hearing about something called techno from detroit at that time as well. Have not read it in years though. Kinda fitting that something I was involved in would end up in AP. Everything comes to a full circle... p.s. To answer a couple of emails I got. at the time of the compilation of the top 20 chart "enter the monkey" only existed as a test CDR. It is indeed pressed now and is no longer available in CDR format. More info and such at the url below. also, thanks for the supprt Andrew (and everyone else out there; you know who you are) -daniel Head Monkey Mad Monkey Records http://monkey.eliteware.com

Yeah, I've asked many of idm's major playas to contribute DJ lists and BPM charts to A.P. If any of you other talented idm-ists with proven track records are lurking out there and want to get in the pages of an internationally distributed 'glossy' mag, contact me. A.P's BPM and Reviews columns are very idm-friendly; you just gotta get past the crap cover artists to find em.
