Some small ska label put out a pair of compilations called SKAmpler a couple of years ago - that's probably what they're selling. Greg

can anyone out there confirm that teh releases on myshopnw are not cdr dupes? why I am suspicious? it says that the cds ar emanufactured by K-TEL which is definitely not the case with the vc stuff (most is manufactred by hand by me and friends actually;P), and tehy also don't really show any pics of art or anything for most. I remember being down at vc once and hearing and seeing solicitation stuff from K-TEL regarding alternative menas of distro and stuff so I guess anything could be possible. so bluntly, has ANYONE ordered anything from myshopnow on this list and what have they gotten? kid! ps. autechre tri repetea++ (the double cd) is also there for 4.95...damn! There's no way the CD's are CDR copies. The Cd's are not on K-tel. The K-tel category that is being used is just a generic category that is being used for smaller labels - much less time consuming for them to catalog them this way. There's no way they could be making CDR copies of thousands of CD's anyway - way too time-consuming. Besides, with such a high-profile web site they'd end up in jail real fast.

i don't think they can be cd-r dupes. if they are, then we can expect them to get out of business within the next days. what i think is more plausible is that k-tel buys massive amounts of cds at a very cheap cost which lets them sell them at less-than-wholesale price. although this is easy to picture with big label releases such as autechre or aphex twin, i have to say i'm scratching my head as of how skampler or vc stuff can get on there. then again i don't see why k-tel would refrain from buying certain kinds of music just because they're obscure. if what they do is buying as much as they possibly can afford to, then they'll buy anything they find, whoever does it. i think that's the point. now as to how they can sell them for $4.95... gets to show how little cds cost to make, eh? david turgeon at http://www.notype.com

Alternately, they're doing what Reel.com did when it sold Titanic cassettes for 1o bucks--Taking a huge loss early on, in order to get a customer base. They want to compete with Ebay and amazon/cdnow at the same time. I bet someone sees enormous potential in combining both kinds of Internet superstores, so they've found a few big investors, bought in bulk, and are taking a big hit in hopes of a future near-monopoly.
