The main problem with Carboot is that it tries to be two albums: a
chilled-out cut to be played amongst friends in the summertime (smoker's
delights optional), and a thematic album depicting the trials and
tribulations of an upwardly-mobile young black woman living in the city.
Because of this apparent duality, the release lacks a coherent feel that
otherwise mars the listening experience.
It's not perfect, and its not groundbreaking, but I now enjoy plugging it
in every so often for those times when I feel I need something mellow and
relaxing. I ignore the lyrics and whistle along with the soulful bits. Give
it some time, is my take on it.
