Green Velvet is a hard house/chicago techno guise of chicago's own dj Cajmere. His trademark sound is excellent pumping techno/house with his humorous narrations over the music. He has over 30 releases to date on a slew of different labels including: Relief, Open, Music Man, Live, Cajual, and Harthouse to name a few. Several of his tracks have become so popular they could be considered party/rave "anthems." Those include Flash, Stalker, Preacher Man, Never Satisfied, Land of the Lost, and Destination Unknown. I would venture to say Green Velvet is one of chicago's most successful chicago techno/ house artists and one of my favorites as well. I wish there was a Green Velvet "best of" compilation cd i could recommend but, unfortunately for the vinyl impared, most of his releases are vinyl-only with the exception of his most recent Constant Chaos album on Music Man. Other than that, i recommend getting all his eps on Music Man, Relief, and Open. Get more info at this address: http://www.cajual.com/relief/green.htm There's a recent Green Velvet album out called 'Constant Chaos' which is OK, but by far the best examples of his music are his vinyl only EPs. My favourite is probably 'The Stalker', but there are several available. He also does cracking DJ sets and live appearances - with his fluorescant green wig and flying goggles, he puts the shits up happy club crowds with his hypnotic brand of dark house music. You haven't lived till you've heard 'Flash' played out, with its machine gun snare batteries and chilling vocal... "He's sucking on a balloon! But this is no ordinary balloon parents, it's filled with a gas called nitrous oxide. Laughing gas. Ha ha ha haaaar. But this is no laughing matter... Camera's ready, prepare to flash..." He's sucking on a spliff! But this is no ordinary cigarette, parents; it's filled with green twigs and leaves called marijuana... Oh dear oh dear. Sorry, but it doesn't strike me as particularly clever. I'm not talking about the music - which I haven't heard - but this quote doesn't make me favourably inclined to start with. It's that patronising air of "us" against "them". We, who are in the know, and the rest of the moronic 'parents' out there. Sore spot.

Hmm, I didn't interpret it that way at all. To me the track seems designed to induce paranoia in the kids in the club. They're there hiding in the dark corners doing their naughty little balloons, or joints or whatever, and then there's this scarey voice coming over the PA, implying that everyone knows what they're up to, and that they're probably on film right NOW! Its not a happy song about getting high, its a scarey song about doing drugs in dirty corners of seedy nightclubs. Anyhow - its a great track - very dark, low end throbbing, if you think all house music is fluffy and light weight, then you should check some Green Velvet. CheerioAndrewC.

Oh - cool. Yes, I can see that's another take on it. Okay. I have no problem with house music - time and a place for everything. Thanks for giving me that angle; it's easy jumping to conclusions. I * np : Bedouin Ascent off Chill out of Die ~ you can also mail me at <lime909@hotmail.com>
