Hi, folks. I'm coming out of lurk mode to second some recommendations I've seen on the list for the recent D'arcangelo 'Shipwreck' release on Rephlex. I'm surprised more people haven't been talking about this! This disc has to be the best thing the label has put out since 'Feed Me Weird Things' (though not as groundbreaking) and reminds me a lot of the 'feel' (though not necessarily the sound) of early Rephlex releases. It's so good that it makes the lameness of 90% of Rephlex output over the past couple of years that much more obvious. Stuff like this is why I started listening to IDM in the first place. Could the music on this disc be classified as electro? I've always imagined electro as being defined by naked drum machine patterns and synth sounds (see Interdimensional Transmissions' 'From Beyond' comp, though I really liked the Phoenecia track), but this isn't as straight-forward as that even though it has a similar sound. Based on several things I'd read, I was under the impression that D'arcangelo material had more of a 'retro' feel to it and as a result I had stayed away. The last track on 'Shipwreck' and the track on the Suction split 7" with Solvent have a slightly new-wavey synth pop feel, but not enough to put me off. How do their other releases compare to this disc? Also, if anyone can recommend other artists/labels that are producing stuff in this vein (aside from Suction and early Rephlex releases) please let me know. Thanks!

the I have to agree. I really like this one (except for 1 or 2 tracks that are a little too retro for me--although I DID like the track on the Suction release). My only complaint is that it's too damn short! I payed something like $22 for 35 minutes! It should be priced like an EP, IMO. Oh well. Jeff

It seems as if D'arcangelo has lost quite a bit of edginess since he released that rephlex mini-LP a few years ago. the music on Shipwreck is pleasant enough, but it somehow seems like a regression. Phthalocyanine extrapolated on what D'arcangelo was doing and really ran with it. dave segal

Hmm to my ears, it sounds like a definate progression. The beats are more complex and interesting, the production levels have gone up, that and it sounds like the melodies work better together. That being said, I think both discs are quite excellent. D'Archangelo isn't a he, its a set of brothers. What other pseudonyms have these guys recorded under that I need to check out. As for the CD's overal length, it doesn't seem to bother me as the tracks all work together and it feels like a complete work. Lets just hope they don't wait another 3 years to put out a CD Rob Codec! http://www.mindstorm.com/codec LogiQ http://www.mindstorm.com/logiq

They've released SEVERAL EPs/12"s as Automatic Sound Unlimited, Centuria (City), Monomorph, Intermolecular Forces, D duo, Last Sinclair (see my website for them http://multsanta.home.sprynet.com/darcangelo/ for a discography) Most of this stuff is OOP, but there were two Monomorph albums on Disturbance that should still be available. but it should be fair warning that a lot of their earlier stuff is in a more typical techno vein, and some really really influenced by early aphex. tho it's pretty good. I'm gonna try to do some real audio of some of the rarer stuff Marcos sent me... There's this one track from 'Diagrams 1-4' that sounds almost like proto-funkstorung, 'cept five years earlier.

well, they've done other stuff since the Rephlex CD (afformentioned nature 12", Last Sinclair 12"), but mainly, as i understand it Marco was living in England and Fabrizo was still in Italy, thus making collaberations kinda hard. I think Fab's in England now (could be wrong tho), soooo.... but coming soon is a 12" on Gonzi's Orange label (with an Andre Estermann remix !!) /m

I still think the deckless should buy a turntable. :)
