(PAHHHHhahahahahahaha)^nth power. Trust me on this one, Springfield is
an electronic vacuum. The SMSU factor is a good theory and it may be
true, but I'm at the other college which would be Drury, down the road.
Two years there- have yet to encounter a true IDM fan. The question is:
how did I get into it? There has always been electronics lurking in the
background my whole life. Hip-Hop and rap dominated the 4th-6th grade
years then onto Nine Inch Nails in the early 90s. Then, one of three
turning points occured: In '92, an indie/alternative rock station
called the Planet began playing these phenomenal mixes that would have
been the equivalent of the old school "Hit The Decks" or "Rave Til'
Dawn". I was stunned. The naive radio announcer would actually
introduce the mixes by saying "uh...this is a new form of music; we're
not quite sure what to call it- we've been told it's 'rave.' Call us
with suggestions." (Hope the listmembers can keep from laughing so hard
to trust me that this is very true). After I heard "Next Is The E" by
Moby in '93 and then "On" by Aphex Twin in '94, I literally became an
exclusive listener of electronic music. Best Buy and Blockbuster music
allowed me to discover Autechre, Mouse on Mars, Sire released Aphex
Twin, Orbital, Orb, etc. Now, 296 CDs later, I do mail-order
exclusively for Bochum Welt, Squarepusher, Reload, AFX, and many others
because there is nowhere else for me to go. Columbia seems to have a
rather healthy scene (maybe); I've seen fliers for electronic-oriented
radio shows around the MU campus. Also, there is that used CD shop
downtown (I think Ninth street) where I scored Analogue Bubblebath 4.
We need to form an alliance...well, more like you telling me...about
shops/performances/raves/releases etc. within the
Columbia-KC-Springfield-St. Louis area. Okay, too much written. Hey, do
you write music? I make simple little tracks heavily focused on melody
and rhythm in a Bochum Welt/Autechre/AFX vein. If you do the same or
would like to trade/sell/recommend CDs, let me know.
