they played live here in cologne yesterday, and while the music was cool, i thought the same thing really. i don't have any funkstörung releases except for some comp appearances maybe, but what we heard yesterday could easily have come from any recent autechre ep. while i love to dance to autechre, this was mostly head-bobbing stuff, too. on a different note, when nightmares on wax comes to your town, go there. they played here last week with a full band playing live instruments to their own records that mr evelyn spun. he was not at all the introverted guy as whom he comes across in interviews. at one time he invited girls from the crowd up on the stage to smoke a spliff with him while the band jammed along. now maybe that's a little whack but still the music was just wonderful and funky as hell. while i'm at it, i might mention that mouse on mars and underworld also played here recently, MoM sounding a little to rock-ish at the end and seeming to have sound problems and employing a live drummer that seemed to add little value to the drum machines. their performance was nothing compared to a little gig of theirs in other music (nyc) in '97, where they cranked out the most incredible minimal beats i'd heard in a long time. underworld (which i'm not that big a fan of) came across as very charismatic and had visual effects that alone made the show worth visiting. cheers, tom
