Another one for you - anybody who likes Add N to X may be interested in getting their first 3-track 7" single (ltd. to 500 copies), when they were known as VA6; The b-side ("i=cool") is very much on par with what they're doing now. Look on Blow Up's webpage www.blowup.demon.co.uk for more details. If you're lucky you'll also get a nice sampler CD and membership to their club. I picked up a CD of theirs in a shop due to the cool cover of a girl being hacked up and a synthi being shoved in her.. the music was quite uninteresting though. Andre... Webdesigner & Faxlabel Advocate http://www.faxlabel.com

Actually, she's giving birth by caesarean section to the synth. And I found the music quite interesting - electronic stuff well integrated with live instruments and it sounds quite good actually. Very fat synths with a good groove behind them (some site says Velvets with analog synths is a good comparison). Ah well, doesn't matter anyway, personal taste is so subjective. Addicted to Noise (www.addictedtonoise.com) has a review there.

Again, I havent seen it (the CD), so Im not judging anyone, but it was the third email I read today and it just sounded really... bad.. or rather it *read* really bad.. Im not the most PC person but to read " I bought it cuz of the cool picture of a woman getting hacked up" just seemed over the top.. Sorry to sound conservative.. I hate conservatives! Here is a review I wrote for a local paper: Add N To X On the wires of Our Nerves Mute This is the CD Kraftwerk would have made if they had worshipped Satan. Here we have mangled electronics, vocoded vocals and frantic drumming all done in the man/machine style. That is not to say this is retro. This is a modern take on machine music, which at times can be humorous or downright dark. The front cover depicting a woman giving birth by cesarean section to a Moog sums up the album. Most of the songs employ fast beats (some synthesized, some live) and relentless synth work. The synths are the secret here. The tones used are sterile and voids of life, but other elements that are present create an organic feel. Thus there is a juxtaposition that propels the music into the future. Is this a comment on the state of things? Is this reflective of a society enamored by technology? In a lot of ways it is. This is the sound of packets of data traveling the dark corners of the net. This is the sound of a human being reduced to zeros and ones. However, it is not a CD that pushes the listener away. Instead it draws you into the darkness and once there you will find it to be a comfortable place. Alienation never occurs because the music has enough human quality to keep you there. This is more than machines dreaming. -daniel

1) They're signed to Mute now. Have released 'little rocks in the sun' which is an excellent 11 min. track - starts out quite pleasantly, moves into darker d'n'b-type territory before building noisily to the end (the vinyl's hexagonal which is quite cool). No great change in direction from 'on the wires...'. 2) They have also done a remix for st. etienne to be found on 'bad photographer' - very good indeed. Not a trace of St. ettienne on it (not always a good thing) but quite lovely. 3) Remix of one of the tracks on 'Root' - the Thurston Moore remix project. It's essentially an exhillerating build up of analogue noise which really only serves to contrast the more structured tracks on the album. These are few and far between but, surprisingly, Blur manage to come up with an ace little number!

Don't start this again - it caused quite a stir with some of the humourless types on the list last time this came up (particularly those who didn't realise the girl was in the band - if my memory serves me). Nick

I'll field this question... As a designer, there are certain clich?s you must not tread upon. One would be the expected orange vinyl and an orange diskette as mention in the quoted message. Though a clever idea, I would imagine you would have to do something interesting with it. Here are some other clich?s that a designer must not apply to a cover layout: Bass speakers, a picture of the band / group / or artists involved (with the exception of Mr. Aphex), the ever popular technics 1200 mkII turntable, the TB-303 (seen quite often in some form or another on those DJ mix CDs)... Anyway, I'm sure you and everyone else has the idea by now. But I'm sure Gonzi has a more simple anser to the question. === jason >>> underscore: http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~nworth1 underscore mailing list http://www.egroups.com/list/underscore designstorung: http://members.xoom.com/jm45675/Designstorung.html _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
