He was one of the most important musicians in Jamaica, he was a producer and played melodica. He either played on or produced (literally) hundreds (if not thousands) of records. He was (obviously) incredibly influential, especially in the 'dub' world. I could go on and on, but it's not really IDM, so I'll restrain myself. No one on any of the mailinglists I'm on has been able to find any news on the internet that has anything to do with him dying, but someone from the On-U list apparently called rounder records and they "more or less verified" that he has passed away, and there's a bulding thread on r.m.r. about it, so I guess it's true. I don't know of any collaborations between him and Laswell. It's hard to tell with The Beret-wearing-wonder's release schedule (which is still holding up at a steady 500 releases a week, I believe) I think Augustus was probably used to working with better bass players :) (no point in my post, except an opportunity to make a Bill Laswell joke...) .Bil.
