Listening to 'Ticklish Matters' for the billionth time, I am again amazed by how far afield Naohiro Fujikawa's releases are from the general realms of experimental music. So I wanted to ask - is there anyone else out there who is releasing similarly-minded material? The kind of shattered-sound reconstructions and off-balance rhythms of the last couple albums make it seem like Bisk is looking at music from a completely different angle than the rest. Secondly, are there any interviews/articles/webpages out there? I can't seem to find any information about him other than what is on the liner notes. paul roquet www.mother.com/~bravopop ?Ambiguity supposes an eventual resolution of itself, whereas certitude implies further ambiguity. Yeah, "Time" is pretty good but also pretty standard, with hints of what is to come in the next two albums ("Strange or Funny-Haha?" (97) and "Ticklish Matters" (98)). The overall feeling of "Time" (kind of dark and unsettled) carries over to "Strange..," but the second album is much more abstract in terms of song construction, sample edits, and bizarre rhythms. It sounds like a mess at first but soon becomes quite beautiful. The latest album, "Ticklish Matters," has an equally disheveled quality, but has a brighter sound to it thanks to more distinguishable instrumentation (piano, guitar, keyboard...). The general consensus (I think): "Strange.." and "Ticklish Matters" are both far better albums than "Time," and both highly recommended, "Strange or Funny-Haha?" being the more essential of the two. Not for the reasons you quote for liking Bisk, I find that Elfish Echo touches a similar place for me - but in an ambient vein (which is why I say "not for the same reasons"). I also find "Ticklish Matters" a different animal than their previous two releases (which seem a bit more similar to each other stylistically) - I like 'em all, though. Bisk, EE and Matmos occupy a hard-to-describe neighborhood in my demographic categorization. Perhaps it's because they're all difficult to graph. paul roquet wrote:

Something else which hasn't been mentioned, but which does remind me of Bisk, is the album by Slicker, 'Confidence in Duber'. It's by John Hughes (yeah, the son of the teen film maker, member of Bill Ding), and is a lot of cut up noises, sweeping about in stereo. Rhythmically it is far easier to follow than Bisk, but it has that highly digital collage feel, and thus might be worth a listen. I'd like to second Michael's recommendation of the Slicker album on the Hefty label. Really nice mix of melody & percussive chaos yielding a sound akin to Bisk, µ-ziq, FX Randomiz, Freeform and maybe Roupe.
