Upon hearing this, I immediately inspected the whole of my tin-encased collection. Yup, a tiny little stress crack on my copy of ...compiled, right on the rim. To me it looks like ...compiled is the only one I have that's affected. Substance "Session Elements" and the Maurizio M album are both in good shape & I've had those longer. I think it depends on how tightly the little ring in the center "snaps" into the CD's donut hole. ...compiled makes a pretty loud pop, while the other two just sort of fall into place. The stress of the plastic against the tin is what's causing the cracks. What I've done is deform the ring to a safer diameter using a pair of pliers. It took less than five minutes and now my ...compiled CD should be protected from further damage. I caught it before it got to the playing surface- thanks for the warning. So: don't panic, look for warning signs, and then fix it. I couldn't give up those metal boxes, I just couldn't. Tom

all i did was get some of the cheap plastic sleeves that a lot of CDs or CD-Roms come in, slid the discs in them, and then put the sleeve in the metal box. still have the metal box, CDs are inside, no cracks. np:ischemic folks:schematic good crunchy melodic stuff. plus more beautiful packaging by tDR!

you've been lucky; my copy looks more like the host of a squashed arachnoid at this point. :) oh well. i wasn't listening to the damn thing anyway. actually, that might have been the reason why it's so badly cracked now; it never had a chance to loosen up, kind of. -- david turgeon at http://www.notype.com

Wow, those metal boxes sound like the best manifestation of "planned obsolesence" I've ever heard of in the music biz. As soon as they fall apart, they can make a new compilation that you have to buy. I think I'll quarrantine the 3 CR 12"s I've got in case they are set to explode at y2k. i keep all my cr cases a safe distance from my cds, i think they will bend within 3 or 4 feet. the worst one however was the showcase cd packed in hemp or whatever it was. i couldnt even get it out once before i destroyed the first third of the disc. that whole 'buy vinyl' stance is fine, but unfriendly packaging is ridiculous. cl
