UK release: June 14 on ZTT US release: June 15 on Universal The band lineup is now: Trevor Horn (apparently taking a more active role than before), Anne Dudley, Lol Creme, and Paul Morley. Morley, as far as I can tell, isn't contributing to the music, just the art direction. This is a new studio album, their first since 1989's "Below the Waste". The band dissolved in 1990, and reformed in 1997 to work on this new album. In the mean time, the China label commissioned many dreadful compilations and remixes of the material they hold (held?) the rights to. This reformation is significant to me in that: - they are back on ZTT, with Trevor Horn at the helm; - they've reinvented their approach to making music, in light of the fact that their previous approach (samplers being used as song construction tools) is no longer cutting-edge; - JJ Jeczalik is noticeably absent and everyone is tight-lipped about why.

The Prodigy have nothing to do with this album. However, Rakim (the rapper) guests on the debut single "Metaforce", a Roni Size remix of which can be downloaded from http://a2bwest.a2bmusic.com/a2/ (requires the A2B player, which requires registration and the RealPlayer G2... I expect someone will post an MP3 of it before the week is out). Reviews of the album on the Art of Noise and ZTT mailing lists have been positive, although no one is terribly enthusiastic about "Metaforce". A recent chat with Anne Dudley (or some promotional robot) on Yahoo! revealed that there are different promo versions of the album available already, and there will be many remixes to come. Related URLs: http://www.theartofnoise.com/ (promotional site setup by ZTT) http://www.ztt.com/ (ZTT site that contains more, older AoN info) http://www.hyperreal.org/music/lists/aon/ (aon-chat list archive & info) http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt (extensive discography) There is now (finally) a Universal Records site, but it does not yet contain any AoN info. Recommended purchases: 'Daft' CD, which is all of 'Whos Afraid' plus extra tracks 'In Visible Silence', which has the post-ZTT classics 'In No Sense? Nonsense!', which is bombastically gorgeous, in spite of "Dragnet" and the Fat Boys samples - Mike ______________________________________________________________________ Mike Brown / Hyperreal | Director, Hyperreal Music Archive PO Box 61334 | http://www.hyperreal.org/music/ Denver CO 80206-8334 USA | Software Engineer, www.netIgnite.com

You're showing your (young) age, Aaron. :) Us oldsters are more likely to compare it to "Close (to the edit)" or "Beatbox".

Out in mid-June as someone has mentioned. Promos are out there - I got mine yesterday, and it seems to be the finished album. Personally, I'm a little underwhelmed - too much d'n'b-lite with saxaphone (ick) and such. It's not *totally* awful, but as someone who was a big fan of AoN back in the day, I was nearly peeing myself with glee when I slid the disc outta the envelope, and I expected it to knock me on my bum, esp. since Horn is back in the fold. And no, the Prodigy ain't on it. Whatever. I'm too busy grooving on this Electro-Lounge compilation that I got yesterday as well to worry about much else. Yma Sumac mixed by Q-Burns! Louis Prima mixed by Tranquility Bass! Dean Martin & Julie London mixed by The Rip-Off Artist (uh, who he be?)! "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" mixed by Gus Gus! Plus Wagon Christ, mu-Ziq, MBM... oooooh baby. (it's out in June on some label called The Right Stuff) Greg

Hmm. Who's Afraid Of...? was a good album, but they definitely hit their peak on In Visible Silence, some real excellent rhythms there. In No Sense? Nonsense was less rhythmy but had some very nice moments on. And then Below the Waste was dire, really bad. -- Ben Coffer http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

It didn't sound very smart until that second to last line, but I've heard the "Jump Jive and Wail" version Tranquility Bass does, and while I am so sick of that song by now, if ANYONE should be allowed to fuck with it, it should be Tranquility Bass. That, and I like Q-Burn's a lot, so I am gonna have to pick this one up (mu-ziq? hell jah!).

I'll add that I heard a track (don't know the title) from this last week on a radio show that was drop-dead gorgeous: real strings (always a Horn / Dudley specialty), cool samples & narration, and tastefully spicy breakbeats. I want to stress that it sounded in no way dated, trendhopping, or any of the other things that sometimes happen to your favorite older bands when they release music after a long layoff... -d.w.
