I'm quite looking forward to getting the new Total Eclipse release on blueroom... they're more known for their straight-up goa but their last 2cd set had a full cd of great chillout stuff, it's still one of my favorite albums (the other cd fills the extra space in the box nicely). Look for the Infinite Excursions comps on TIP too for more interesting chilled psy trance... Cheers Joh

one other reason dj's aren't meshing more styles together seems to stem from all these bullshit events that book hundreds of dj's. even if it's multiple rooms, the longest set a dj will get is two hours. how much ground can you cover in that alloted time without sounding completely schitzo? i miss the old days. parties had a warm up dj, a live event, a closer dj. give the two dj's four hour sets and the live act two. you can't please all the people all the time, so why try? very agreed... the problem is though... how many djs can "handle" djing for more than 90-120 minutes...shit nowadays 60 minutes is the normal set... ?? of the djing ive seen over the past years... the ones that stand out are the long building sets: i.e. Mixmaster Morris, Lauren Garnier, Richie Hawtin... david morales, danny teneglia, carl cox....and well thats about all.. a few other sets stand out...(atmospheric audio chair--chicago..but thats more of a collective) but are not even in the same "league" as what tese individuals have done. i agree let djs who can pspin for over 3 hours... LET THEM. but as was mentioned in a deleted section: the promoters need $$$$ very few djs can have the draw of the aforementioned djs. therefore we will still continue tos ee less of it....unless in a club.setting (which is fine by me...the club setting that is..just wish more clubs were near me) anyways..let the chaos continue

I have a bit of a sore spot for some of the older Rising High/Fax trance stuff, including Casper Pound's chubby trance and Oliver Lieb's lengthy Spicelab workouts. But I suspect proper trance has really come and gone (see Eye-Q's bankruptcy, etc.) There's some neato stuff on Platipus records that borders on cheese, but it still pretty good. Hard driving beats and lush synth, miles away from even remotely sounding like goa/progressive trance. Pete Namlook was making awesome cheesy trance before he "chilled" out completely.... 1-Year-Dance (on Fax) is an awesome collection of mostly Namlook-related trance projects from the first year of Fax. Witness the work of Namlook and Atom Heart working chubby 4/4 booms and typewriter clicks with a sample of a woman saying "I'm a secretary and I work all day!" Tee hee..... Aaron onnow: Chopin

I'm NOT *defending* trance. Just a few comments. There's a healthy and alive trance 'scene' here in South Africa (as is in Israel, I believe) and this is probably partially due to the fine weather allowing open-air gatherings and all-weekend raves somewhere in some scenic place out in the bush far enough for the noise not to bother locals and out of the way of snooping cops. I have a very close friend and part-time DJ whose musical taste overlaps largely with mine, except that he is also into trance and has dragged me along to a few events. Of these, I have been most impressed by the recent Suzuki gig - but then, he wasn't playing straight-up trance (in fact, the majority of trance-heads there were very disappointed) but some of the Matsuri stuff is well worth investigating if you want to broaden your musical cathment area. Simon Posford (Hallucinogen/Shpongle) puts together some interesting sets live and what I've heard on disc (check his "Twisted" label) is also impressive from the amount of work that he obviously puts into it. Where techno (for example) is made up of repeated loops, so is trance, but every time the loop comes round, something subtley changes - there are an enormous amount of layers and textures and millions of little things going on. I can hear and appreciate this, but it generally leaves me cold without connecting. You mention "obnoxious and pop-ish" - (no, that's not all there is). There are several sub-genres of trance, just as there are in other formats. There's goa - with insanely high BPM's, there's also progressive trance, uplifting trance - you-name-it trance. My favourite would have to be ambient dub trance, most of which could happily sit in anybody's IDM collection. In fact, as we speak I'm listening to an album on the German mainly trance label Spirit Zone by an outfit called Patchwork (Album "Odeon: 1998) which I'd classify as IDM rather than trance. This was lent to me by the friend I mentioned above and I've been enjoying it a lot. It's unobnoxious, very pleasant and well crafted. Would fit well into any set that goes the Kruder & Dorfmeister route. Go investigate it. I *

I'm by no means an expert on trance and my collection of trance records numbers less than I have fingers, but this question has been posed before and the universal answered tended to be LSG (Oliver Lieb). I have yet to find a trace record that could match the power and brilliance of his "Collected Works" disc on hooj choons. perfectly mixed, intelligent effects, picks you up and doesn't stop until 69:33 minutes later. when I first got it, 'Collected Works' stayed in my discman for a solid month and served as the perfect accompaniment to my daily commute from suburbaban Chicago into the Loop. excellent energy. as far as trance labels are concerned, feedback I've received points towards the aforementioned Hooj Choons and Platipus as well. hooj choons online: http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/morrissey/587/index.html daevid j

I just heard this thing by Ekko on Interchill, called 'Centripetal.' You could call it trance, I suppose... highly improvised, with tabla and this funny droning bass-guitar-tamboura-harp thing called the stikharp. Maybe not all that intellectually stimulating, but significantly more interesting than a lot of trance because it has some improvisation on it. You could call it 'jam trance' or 'ethno trance' or something like that, I suppose.

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: Posford's side project Shpongle put out a great disc called "Are You Shpongled?" at the end of last year. Very intricately programmed, a lot of attention paid to crafting the sounds used -- and a live flute player. Fun stuff; the last two tracks are mindblowing. Lukas

What about Speedy J? He is undoubtedly an IDM artist, but some of his stuff is really trancey (like his 'live' album or some tracks from "G-Spot"). I think System 7's "Fire" album can also be called intelligent trance. And of course Orbital and their "Orbital 2" album. Nick.

I was more or less talking about the idea of trance, trance inducing music, and how to create good trance.. I agree, typical trance, speaking towards the genre, is crap for the most part.. it's actually wannabe stuff from a higher form of music. The trance that is commonly heard is clubs is a cheap untalented wannabe of what it should be.
