Gramaphone has an ambient/experimental section that has A-Musik, Skam, Clear, Rephlex, Thrill Jockey, etc. stuff. They usually get in all of the new albums/CDs that we talk about. Although if you ask about Autechre in the store, most will say "who?" but just ask for the experimental buyer, he seems to know his shit. For other Chicago IDM stores, Reckless has a half-assed electronica section. Vintage Vinyl in Evanston has alot of older experimental electronic stuff (plus an amazing selection of old Factory/4AD/Creation stuff) and gets in small quantities of new titles, just ask ahead of time. Lastly, the new Virgin Megastore on Michigan Ave. has an amazing, albeit commercial, electronica section. Mike.

Skam, Clear, Rephlex,....At Gramamphone *LAFF* They buy two of them and put them in the bins... the only good shit ive foudn there was some of the Demon releases by Franeck... plus the store clerks are morons ("d00d...check out this killer release by bangaltar man") they do have a nice cut out section (scored some spymania stuff in it). as for thrill jockey stuff..who in chicago/midwest us doesnt have it? i usually head out to the quaker's deaf....i dont know the addy...last time i was there they wouldnt let you listen to the releases ... go there if you know what you want. *shameless plug on* if you are up for the drive..champaign/urbana is two hours south of chicago...and as of April 1 the store front for Big Wheel Clothing/Distortion Records will be opening. I try to carry all the new IDM releases out there...including: Worm Interface, Hot Air, A-Musik, Drop Beat, plus many unknown domestic artists, and much more we will soon have online ordering...but the web hoster hasnt completed their part of the deal yet. *shamless plug off* good luck -mikeD Distortion Records np:Bitwise Operators: Ice Cream Man: Beige Records (www.beigerecords.com)

Granted, I don't think Gramaphone is all that great, but on a visit there this weekend, I was surprised to find they had almost every record in the Fat Cat catalogue, the new City Centre Offices 7", Ladomat stuff, some Lucky Kitchen CDs, the new Cylob single, Jega/808State split 7", all the Warp Peelies, the new Metamatics District 6 12", the new Black Dog 12", and a stack of Bola "Soup" CDs. I've learned a long time ago not to count on store clerks for insight (after being one for 5 years and seeing what they make....its not like the businesses give a shit what you know, its more like how little will you work for in order to have a hip high profile job). One thing I can't say enough about is Grammaphone employee DJ Sativa's mixtape "New Day Rising"...very nice smooth acidhousejazzhopwhatever. He's got a newer one out I hear, but I haven't been in the area to check it out yet. peace clockwise np: Peanut Butter Wolf "My Vinyl Weighs A Ton"

I just dropped by there yesterday since I just arrived in town for the first time in two years, and I picked up the Jammin' Unit cd "Are you Prepared?" and the first Metamatics ep on Clear. I'll probably head back today to pick up the Musik Aus Strom release I saw. --Bill p.s.- for those on the more ambient tip, I strolled by Rocket 69 and they have a good selection of FAX, KM20, etc. I saw the 3rd edition of Rising High's Chill Out or Die series, a good amount of Source cds...earth to infinity, etc.

The clark tower (~2000 n.) is one of the best I've been in. Nothing exceedingly rare, but a lot of hard to find CDs. Same with the new virgin. Last time I was there was opening day and they had a better "electronic" section than most specialty shops. Both are worth a look. -andrew -- /all major credit cards accepted/ / /http://www.calvin.edu/~asmith89/

agreed w/ most of the above list... reckless- vinyl is good, but the way they display the cds is the worst system ever! The Virgin megastore downtown. didn't have to spend much time in there before i knew it was *way* overpriced. don't bother. i have to recommend one more shop: Dusty Groove (~milwaukee/division). great for new and rare hip-hop, funk, soul, latin, jazz, acid jazz, brazillian.... mostly vinyl, some cds. good prices on new stuff. goto dustygroove.com to get a feel of what the stock.

yeah, i agree completely. no vinyl. good magazine selection. a good friend of mine lives on the adjacent corner so I manage to stop in just about every time i'm over there (bad news for the wallet). then again, i went there recently to get the new We cd. Even though their computer said 7 were in stock, no one could find it *anywhere*. just to clarify, it's on Clark and Belden (2300 n. just south of Fullerton). oh, one more. Evil Clown (~3400 n halsted) in the heart of boys town, land of rainbow-clad phallic structures lining the street. decent selection of cds, no vinyl. you can preview any cd you like. Yeah, but what about Record Exchange on Belmont 925 West Belmont.(773)975-9285. They R really noted for the Used bins, but if U want to fill in old spaces in your collection, they have some ok stuff. Actually, one of the guys there first introduced me to Global Communication(REMOTION). Since then, I have been GC this, GC that! Hk-90!~

Accordingly, I want to drink like a frat boy Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and then spend Thursday the 23rd touring the record stores, draining my bank accounts and maxxing the visa. Store suggestions? as far as record stores go, try gramaphone located at 2700 n clark. heavily into house/techno, but some of the more popular idm- warp, rephlex, etc. probably 90% vinyl as that is where almost all of the city's dj's shop. prices are not very good. for a more general selection try reckless near broadway + belmont. as for drinking, you would need to give some more details as to where you are staying. i would go to the nearest liquor store as i dont like crowds or paying too much for alcohol. cl
