made it up to chicago last nite for the Phthalo, low res, mannequin lung show.... nice quaint space... seats had to be removed to make space for more people. it was good to see quite a few people out for this. heres the goods: mannequin lung: dj set...i was expecting this due to the info given on the plugresearch.com site... well what can i say... it was poorly done. the tracks he played were good. but the order and the flow was just disorganized. he went from noisey techno to electro to noise to hip hop w/lyrics to noisy techno to trip hop to electro... the flow just wasnt there...the tracks were nice... but as it has to be called: "jukeboxing" not djing. Phthalocyanine: the one i came to see.... i have the navy.worship cd......really enjoyed it... when his set came up....he pushed the levels a little far...causing some distortion to come out of the speakers (how could you tell though? hint: the speakers *lit up* each time a distressing noise played) i enjoyed this for about the first 25 minutes...then my mind started to wander....it started to get boring... it sounded like any old random joe slamming keys on a keyboard hooked to a sampler... the sounds that were coming out were quite unique and odd... nothing a "normal" synth could possibly make... became quite predictable also...*slow down* *drummy buildup 15 seconds later* *chaos occurs for a bit* (repeat as needed)... went up stairs and had a latte. Low Res: by far the highlight of the nite... abstrakt beats and chaotic noise....very disjointed...yet organized. i guess this is what i was looking for throughout the nite... i heard the majority of it upstairs through the alternate speaker system set up upstairs... very nice.. that fast moving...irregular yet organized beat patterns.. made my nite.... overall it was worth well over 5 bucks... mad props to m/j for hooking this up and getting things started in chicago. im looking forward to the upcoming events.... it was nice meeting those of you whom i met for the first time (and those whom i already know =) -mike.d np:v/vm:machine #2

it was more than mike j. and i expected, but there were still many no-shows of people that had planned on attending.

i tend to agree here. strong individual tracks (din, rhythm+sound, some pr tracks), but they didnt necessarily work well as a whole. he did a short housey set after low res that was much better.

if there is a way to generate randomness, he figured it out.

low res did an excellent set. imagine love boat... with dubby effects and some more organized beats. got to drive danny from the airport to the venue and had a very interesting conversation. very nice, down-to-earth guy.

if any other listmembers were there, it was me collecting the 5 bucks. thanks again to mj for getting the pr show and to everyone who came. more cool shows are in the pipeline. if you liked what you saw and know of artists/venues etc. that would be interested in the future, please contact mike at egoiste@enteract.com or reply to me and will get the info forwarded. cl

i did forget to mention that dmitri, allen, and danny were cool as shit. if you have the opportunity to see them/get them to town, do it. how many rock stars would want to see the aquarium and go out for sandwiches?

we found out later that was a 'bulb limiter'. apparently if the monitors are pushed too far (and he was doing that) the orange bulbs in the speakers absorb the extra signal/current whatever. i am sure there are some electrical experts on the list that could explain better than i.

i think it was more of a 'listening' crowd. plus the benches would have prevented movement ,or at least sprained some ankles. what was really strange was when allen started playing some moodyman/theo parrish after the low res set people cleared out fast. did anyone else notice that voiteck was in the front row? talked to him for a bit and found ou that hes been in chicago for weeks with his gear and no place to play! cl

That'd be cool.
