I received "Strange Cargo" this week, which is out on reprint and was dramatically surprised. I haven't had much of a taste for Orbit's stuff. Bassomatic was cool, but not all around fabulous, and Guerilla has more misses than hits for me. BUT THIS!! "Strange Cargo" has instrumentation of Stewart Copelandian proportions. Recorded in 1987, it seems to be free of all dance cliches and instead just rips the walls down with sound. Has anyone purchases "Water From a Vine Leaf" or whatever his last single was? Is there anything else along the "Strange Cargo" lines?

I picked up Strange Cargo III by William Orbit, and I consider it one of my best CD purchases of the year. There doesn't seem to be much discussion of Mr. Orbit on this list, nor uk-dance or alt.rave. Does anyone else have Strange Cargo III? Is this considered i.d.m.? How does SCI and SCII compare to SCIII? It really is a great album, y'all should look for it in your friendly neighborhood music store. ----- Bob Weisend rweisend@oboe.aix.calpoly.edu

Around the inception of IDM, there was a lively discussion regarding Strange Cargo I. I concur with your review of SCIII. Definitely one of my favorites for this year. I wish the vid would come out NTSC.

There have been occasional outbreaks of Mr Orbit on UK-Dance - reviews of the Water From A Vine Leaf single and Strange Cargo III have appeared along with a couple of other comments. SC I and II are in much the same vein as III, though with more of a tendancy towards MOR in places - they appeared on IRS's 'new age' label. :-( There are some good tracks on both though, with probably I being the better. You can hear ideas he later developed in Bassomatic and a couple of the tracks were big amongst Balearic DJs at the time. III is funkier and Water From a Vine Leaf is one of my favourites from last year - particularly From: ??? Date: ??? Subject: ??? Status:

I was just listening to it all night! I really like it, though Will Orbit is somewhat limp compared to Wendy Carlos, his arrangements are infact quite pretty... I'd certainly recommend it, it's at least good for washing the squarepusher out of your ears! it was sumed up perfectly in a review I saw, something to the effect of... "why would anyone want to turn John Cage into something that sounds like a soundtrack for a Lifetime Network movie about cancer" I actually don't mind some of William Orbit's early stuff, but thank you I'll stick to listening to Cage.... I mean c'mon if Yanni had done this it wouldn't be so exciting, but because it's something done by someone relativly hip in the pop world all of a sudden it's revolutinary composer type hype. Jeff

I was sent a Czech newspaper article about this... Vladimír Vlašak warbled on about Orbit's antecedents for a couple of paragraphs (Rick Wakeman!), then this: 'Orbit, real name William Wainright, didn't want to take classical pieces apart, destroy them with unnatural sounds or turn them into some kind of avant garde creations. On the album Pieces in a Modern Style, Orbit's approach is in fact very conservative and delicate - especially in view of the possibilities open to him through modern technology ... Orbit used classical strings for the 10 minute Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, which was issued as a single at the end of last year to fit with the Christmas mood and as a trailer for the album. The music engenders the feeling of a space filled with an elevating and all-embracing mood which strengthens progressively into a sense almost of longing, which could almost be kitsch-like, but is kept from sentimentality by Orbit's skilful handling.' Rubbish. I heard the trancy 'Adagio for Strings' on Radio 1... Barber is rotating in his grave fast enough to power a generator. It was extremely competent trance, yes, but bombastically inappropriate to the original. The contrast between energetic synths and elegiac strings is just too much, and worryingly populist at that. Now, a minimal version in the same vein as SAWII CD2 track2... that would be good. Anyone want to do one? Actually, I admit I haven't heard the album, so this might be unfair; but if this is what he chooses as his example...
