Whew......... Mr Upton, or should I just say LMG for short(Loose McCannon) for short. Thanks, can you supply the dates, just a general era would suffice. Thats loads of material there fella, hmmmmm. I better consult my superiors on this one. Thanks for contributing, thats how I can expand my collection. Not the quanity but the quality. Now that I think about it, those young artist probably try hard to create something explosive(something brilliant or good) so that there name or efforts can be successful in the ever growing market of IDM, just a thought. Alrighty, well for other fine bits and pieces from New Zealand, since you're checking Aspen, I'd recommend the following: Anything on the label Nurture. Nurture release sparse tech stuff, with a pre-requisite that there's one "broken beats" track on every 12". All very nice, my fave being the first Peak:shift release. All are into that old Detroit thing, with some nods to dubby minimal stuff. Still nice bright synth sounds and all that stuff that people interpret as soul. There have been 4 releases I know of, but I forget the exact names. Call me Loose McCannon :-) 1 - Peak:shift - <something> 12" 2 - Clone - Mist 12" 3 - Peak:shift - <something> 12" (includes Peak:shift remix of Aspen's 'Wedding Song' off 'Album') 4 - Micronism - <something> 12" The Micronism tracks are also on CD, released on Kog Transmissions. Definitely my favourite New Zealand release, it's called 'In A Quiet Mind'. Micronism is one of the aliases of Denver McCarthy, who you can also check out on the excellent Statra comp that got a bit of raving on this list a month or so back. Statra itself is a label started by an ex-pat Kiwi (ie. New Zealander - and it's a kind of bird, not a fruit :-) called Harry the Bastard. I have the artists' email addresses, so I could pass on any interest to them. Otherwise, check the Kog web site, http://www.kog.co.nz/ and check out Aspen's techno alias Signer. Interested to hear this one myself, since some of it sounded kinda far from Aspen material!! I'm also a big fan of an old act called Unitone Hi-fi, who were a dub act released on German-run (another ex-pat Kiwi really :-) label Incoming! but took the dub concept a bit further than most of the "new school"... incorporating hip-hop electro and house in a way that sounded good, and always avoided getting all plodding and coffee table like most modern dub (IMO). Probably not one for Kelley, but plenty of others here would probably like them. May well be known for their remix album with Funky Porcini, Muslimgauze, Spectre etc. but their crowning jewel was their next (and last) album 'Boomshot'. Um, all the Nurture stuff is kinda since 97 or 98. Very fine. The Micronism album would be late 98 or early 99, from memory and is definitely the thing I'd rate most.

Aspen is Bevan Smith. He also records as Signer when he does tech house/techno material. You can hear Signer's Giving It Up To Feel Effected album (out soon on New Zealand's Involve in a co-release with Kog Transmissions) in full in RealAudio on Cognition: http://techno.ca/cognition plus two other forthcoming releases from Involve. Michael Upton is a talented, yet humble, producer who records as Jet Jaguar. He's got an album out on Involve. When Aspen and Jet Jaguar get together, the result is Patio. There's a Patio album out on Involve too. More info on involve can be found here: http://www.involve.co.nz hope this helps. andrew duke Kelley Hackett wrote:
