Let me continue the collective mindsuck I'd like advice on a good cheap stereo system (or various components). I'd either like to get good cheap components, a good all-in-one with the emphasis on quality of sound rather than volume, or an all-in-one that doesn't come with speakers. Regarding inexpensive speakers, I've heard good things about the Alpha PSBs. Have I heard right? Also, are there good inexpensive turntables out there (rather than mid-priced)? If I look for a used record player, which brands are reliable? One other question. A cheesy rave flyer (flier?) I picked up said that Dieselboy's first album is the #1 bestselling jungle album ever in the US. Is this some bullshit, or is it a fact? How is the album? Sam

Excellent record. Some female vox, which the listener may consider a + or -. To my Sade-bias, the vox are lush. Jazziest Coldcut record. Breaks and pieces. 3

I just picked up a copy of the original German release as a cut-out last week. Much different then current Coldcut material. At first I though "what the hell...?" but that was quickly erased. The album is some really well-produced acid jazz type material. I enjoy it immensely. Run to store, pay $, enjoy, Paul wesley@interaccess.com

I guess there are two possibilites: either it's just a Jap release, or, alternatively a re-working of the original LP, as someone from the label posted that some of the stuff might be available, possibly with some tasty remixes if that's the original, think twice, since it was released back in 1994, when More and Black were doing stuff different than now, and I find it somewhere halfway between their Lisa Stansfield era and their current stuff Philosophy does have nice moment, even really nice Eine Kleine Headmusik is on it, Sign, Autumn Leaves in three version, with great Irresistible Force Full Chill = brillant Mixmastet Morris' mix in general, more on the jazzy/even housey/sometimes cheesy tip, with live vocals on some of the tracks, but I believe the tracks I mentioned above make it worth a pick also, it never had a CD release mk np. Funkstorung - Funkenstort - amazing..

I remember someone who wanted to trade it with me, and I guess that's what he said, and I didn't find anything about a CD at Ninja Tune web site, but I must be wrong.. anyhow, it forced me to buy a turntable, so I'm glad I didn't know :-) Howie B question: U2 came to town yestarday, and it's not IDM-irrelevant, since they brought Howie B with them, and the guy was spinning in a club after the concert, very nice set, mostly mid-tempo techno/triphop stuff, some jungle, no scratching, but a very interesting selection, and some nice tricks that surprised people dancing, obiously expecting a lame 4-to-the-floor stuff. in general, the audience sucked, as the gig was only for people invited by his label's local office and sponsors, so they didn't actually came for Howie and had no idea who is he. anyhow, the set was surprising as I have his 'Music for Babies', and it's far from what he spun at the club. Did he release anything new recently? remeber reading that he planned something for this summer.. mk np. Ken Ishii - X-mix

Hi all, Im new to the list and as the archives aren't available at the moment i wasn't able to read the discussion on turntables that has been mentioned. Can any one fill me in on the advantages/disadvantages of vinyl. I only own two records (Meat beat manifesto - storm the studio and armed audio warfare) all my autechre, other mbm, everything else i like I own on cd. But id like to know which is the better quality and the pros and cons of each format. Im fairly new to all this someone put me on to autechre about two weeks ago and ive been buying up everything i can get my hands on, they're brilliant. Also i just bought The Aphex Twin Classics can any one point me to some other releases that are good as inttoductions, i particularly enjoyed analogue bubblebath 1 and didgeridoo (its the australian in me :) )THanx fix8

Wait! I need to defend my baby Gemini PT-1000 here... I've been giving it a fair amount of abuse over the last year, and can proudly say it's strong as fuck, the sound quality is fine (I'm using the same cartridge as most technics turntables) and in all, it's a fine machine. Once again.... the two turntables (i.e. Gemini PT-1000, PT-2000) both use the same motors as the technics, that is, same torque. The case is solid rubber, the both weigh the same (25 pounds) and the pitch control is just as fluid. There are two differences. The turntable on a Gemini is designed to slow to a stop when you hit the stop button, unlike the Technics which just do a deadstop (Gemini's slow to a stop over about 1 second). Secondly, the Gemini's pitch control has a cool reset button that will immediately turn the pitch control on and off. It's great for sudden changes, etc. etc. Be creative! :) Otherwise, I mean... even the layout and design is identical. And for $200-$300 cheaper, I can't complain in the slightest. My 2 cents regarding a budget-friendly way to spin your favorite IDM vinyl..... Aaron p.s. On the IDM tip: onnow: Chocolate Weasel "Spaghettification" (ninja tune) I can't stop grinning about this arrival. It sounds nothing like Marc Royal's T Power material... this is upbeat, groovy retro cool with a capital P for funk... or something to that effect.... more words later.

ok. i don't know everything, nor do i claim to, but one thing I *do* know is audio products. i am what could be considered an "audiophile", which means one who searches for the truest form of musical reproduction, which means changing the source the least. on this point, i have a few turntable opinions. i *love* my 1200. its great, i couldnt do better for the cash. its a beast, a behemoth, a monster of a table. if you are a DJ, get it, don't even look at anything else. you'd be crazy. its the standard for a reason. now, if you want the best sound quality, the table that makes your records sound the best they can, don't even think about a 1200. while it is the best quality table you can buy for ~$500, if you can afford ~$1000 (which for people like us who love music should *not* scoff at. think about how much we listen to the music.) or more, look soemwhere else. brands i can think of that are VIP (amazing tables), some budget audiophile tables are thorens.. there are alot of brands i can't quite remember now. what i would suggest is go to a store that sells "audiophile" stereo equipment, which does not include best buy, circuit city, or the rest, and check out some tables. and hear some real amplifiers, while you are at it. to conclude: if you are a DJ, or cannot afford more than $600 ($500 for the table and ~100 for a good cartridge. don't skimp on that!!!), get a 1200. i have one, i love one. now i have heard more expensive tables, and the sound quality from them is astounding. everything is clearer and cleaner, less surface noise (that autechre-prized sound!) and makes records simply sound much better. so i *highly* reccommend to you older folk with real jobs, not like us teens flipping burgers, to get an audiophile table. write me back and i will be able to give you some connections. music on an hi quality stereo is better, thats that. and it can be cheap. my entire stereo cost me $1200, strangely. half that is the table. later, all. hope i helped a tad. (i know i didnt... geez, why do i do these things. :) ) Shane

hm.. i'm not sure about technics or gemini.. but you can get a Numark TT-1700 for $129 from Pro Sound and Stage Lighting.. you can call 1800-945-9300 or go to www.pssl.com .. anyone who's had any experience with these turntables can comment on them.. from what I read in the catalogue it sounds like the bargain turntable if you don't have the cash, or don't wanna spend the cash on a gemini or technics turntable. just for reference.. from ProSound: Gemini XL-BD10..............................$109.99 * Gemini PT-1000..............................$299.99 Gemini PT-2000..............................$379.99 Technics SL-1200MK2.........................$479.99 * if you only wanna spend this amount of cash, get the numark... this is definitely amonst the shittiest turntables ever created. Modern music used to have 2 of these and the platter wobbles like it's on air and it's generally crappy. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

I'd stay away from the Gemini turntables. The last time I used them, they worked like shit. I apologize for offending any devote Gemini users, but they were complete trash. They had no torque which caused them to be EXTREMELY sensitive to your hand when touching them. This is extremely bad during a mix as you can hear the records spinning up or down even when barely touching them. I've recently fiddled with a pair of Vestax tables. They were actually not bad. If you're looking for an inexpensive replacement of the Technics, then I'd suggest these (even though it pains me to think anyone would use anything but Technics for DJing). If you're planning on doing any tricks like scratching, or like the classic spindown effect you get from hitting the start/stop button on the Technics tables, they are irreplaceable! On that note. Look in your local free trade paper. In San Diego we have the Reader which comes out every Thursday and is free. It's a pretty cool local free weekly paper and it contains classified adds. That's the BEST way to find DJ equipment for a reasonable price. It takes some time and persistence to get what you want if you're as picky as I am, but with patience you can find a pretty good deal. Make sure you check out the tables THOROUGHLY when buying used. Check the start/stop button for flaky behavior. Make sure the pitch adjust works well. Make sure the Quartz lock is working. Check the tone arm and make sure it hasn't been abused. Check all the cables to make sure they work properly (esp. the ground cable). Don't worry about the needle. You should ALWAYS buy a NEW stylus and cartridge if buying a used table. You never know what kind of use the table has had. One last comment: ORTOFON! Wouldn't buy ANY other cartridge! Even the Stanton rep. told my best friend (a DJ and record store owner) that the Ortofon cartridges were better than theirs (Stanton's). So there you have it. Oh, and expect to pay around $250-$300 for a used Technics in good shape, unless you get lucky. good luck -rbcIII robot

i'm sorry this is a bit off topic, but i figure someone can help me... i have a Sony 50 disc changer/cassete/radio all in one component system. i also have a turntable that i wish to use. there isnt a jack in the back of the sony for a record player, and when i plug it into the auxiliary, the signal from the record player is very weak. my question is: is it possible to amplify the signal with another type of device? thanks for any help and again, sorry for being a little off topic, sam
