Ok, they don't suck, I just didn't like what I've heard. Here's the problem, Autechre's Incabula (sp?), BOC's Music has the Right.., and FSOL's ISDN have both been highly discussed on this list as great works of music, but I didn't like anything from any of them, and I sorta found them boring. BUT, I like Plastikman's Consumed and most Chain Reaction offerings, and if anything is repetitive and boring those would be, and I like Philip Glass and Reich, so maybe "boring" is subjective. I would like to like Autechre and FSOL and BOC, so with this as a bit of an idea of what I like, can anyone suggest something by any of the above (or anyone else) that I won't return? Thank Tosh

I dont particularly like BOC either... i find it kinda repetative. but you should enjoy the autechre ep's. spyderbilt (X^P)

Look, i realize that it is a great album (the movie Pi actually made me get it back out). I have no nostalgia for it (as i know many otehrs have as an introduction point to IDM or "techno" (mine were moby, the aphex remixes of nin, ICBYD, and bjork) because i found it after amber and tri.. After amber and tri... it definitely seemed dated. Incuna.. seemed to be a great start that they capitalized on and perfected with tri.. My main problem with it was not whatever technical mumbo-jumbo you threw at me, but it seemed to not be mixed well. too murky, and liquid. I believe the same is true of "Surfing on Sine Waves" the other member of the AI series i own. I figured it was just someone at warp wanting different things than i did when they finalized the mix, not quite everything i want. And it didn't bang as loud or grab me as quick as amber or tri.. Thus, if i just want to listen to some autechre, i'll probably pull out anti or tri..++. If i want to play Ae to introduce someone to it, i'll pull out amber and give them "teartear". Live with it.

Spin Amber for him alright, which is my favorite Ae LP----you could hit em with teartear, but that might scare em----so be gentle ha ha ha h a hit em with Further or Yulquen first, and then knock his block off with teartear! Hk-90!

One area of music I haven't heard much about on this list (maybe it would be more of an ambient thing) is more of the dark side of electronics. I'd like to put in a recommendation for one of my favorite CDs - Fetisch Park's Alluvial. It's not at all boring, most of it is rather dark, disturbing, driving, perhaps dance-able. What the artist did is sample the songs of prostitutes in Hong Kong (??) and weave them nicely with well-crafted, opposite-of-minimal, electronic music. Not restrained at all, the music almost "trips over itself" in parts (best way I can describe it!) I'm not good at subgenres (and I tend to think that anything that can be easily pigeonholed is not very interesting) so I can't give you a neat label. This is not very much like the artists that you mentioned you liked, but it's not likely to bore you, more likely to give you a headache. (on Extreme - a fine label, that doesn't put out enough lately!) Another rather obscure CD that is not boring is BP Service - (and I cannot think of the name of the CD. It is not "The machines print soundmaps" which I do not have, but it is also on Tone Casualties - another good label). It's one of those CDs which list alot of "non-musical" instruments in the credits - stuff like chains, pots and pans, children's swings, city ambience. It's not as unstructured as you might think; it is odd, but they put it together well. I'm not sure if it's IDM (I'm still not sure what IDM is...) but I guess you could dance to parts of it, if you're adventurous. So those are my random thoughts on a couple of CDs. couldn't agree more about Tone Casualties. Was really supprised by this label. Excellent stuff in the idm/experimental/ambient way. Recommendations: face: picture of the end - shimmering dark land scapes composed of beats strange sounds and layering. Paris is involved. fibre: sub aquatirc memories - odd, ethnic, dark, almost classical moments with a ambient techno foundation. Lots of vocal snippets, chants and samples. Very good. ivolution: involution - this is ceven key and paris. experimental electronics that is very idm oriented. a slight nod to autechre drew neumann: eye spy - this is music from the show Aeon Flux. Has a very classical feel. hungry ghost: the man ray sessions - a drone cd. But do not let that throw you off. very engaging and at times has an aquatic feel. Interesting note: the studio that does the rug rats owns tone casualties. One of the reasons tone casualties can exist is because that studio is profitable.
