I tend to think there is an illusion of technical complexity in a lot of IDM that tends to fool non-geeks. I know a number of highly skilled people who can replicate the sounds and style w/o much effort. That doesn't mean it would have the same feel but they can certainly replicate the sounds. Also, I would be kind of interested in knowing what is the baseline for "skilled" and "complex" music in IDM.

well from personal experience.. an avante garde/ noise track I made a couple months ago took me like 2 days to finish and a good amount of touching up, for me that is a pretty substantial amount of time for just one track.
