at the following locations: crematory of vienna's main cemetary, the
"zentralfriedhof", atomic insitute of the austrian universities, urania
sternwarte (observatory), wotruba church (a church, made of 152 concrete
blocks), a former emballagenfenfactory, austrian phonothek et al.
phonoTAKTIK.99 has two main focusses: Max Brand -an Austrian composer and
early pionier of electronic music - and a view to the future of electronic
music.
Max Brand
Max Brand, born 1896 in Lemberg, grew up in Vienna. One of his teachers was
Arnold Schönberg. In the 20s he was a successfull composer, namely the
opera "Maschinist Hopkins" was a big success. As a Jew he had to emigrate
from Austria. In the US (he went to New York) he had no success with his
music.
At the age of 50 he decided to go a totally new way. He choose an artistic
equivalent to his modernist philosophy and his ideals of machine-art.
In a cooperation with Robert Moog (who was just starting his work at that
time) he got a special synthesizer, a prototyp of the later so successful
Moog-Series. From then on he united the composer and the performer in one
person.
The following works are very noisy, atonal and rough, so they weren't
successful at all. For that reason, most of them have never been published
and so they are not available for the public.
But this stuff shows a world of sounds which is influenced of the specific
abilities of the synthesizer . It is in some aspects is closely connected
with the productions of the contempary Austrian electronic music. Brand
seems to be an influence, although its impossible.
pay attention if you care
The entry to the phonoTaktik concerts will be free, at least if talking about
money.
The uncommercial focus of techno, ambient,... in the late 80s and early 90s
is gone. At the moment nearly every electronic music is marketable.
The struggle beetween the proponents of "free music" and the position of
the music industy gets virulent in the discussion about the MP3 data
format, which the industry fights by all means.
That means: the music of the future we are talking about at the phonoTaktik,
can't be measured in the terms of money. All concerts and other events are
free-there will be only one (long) guest list. Guestlists have always been
the vehicle for everybody to show that he is part of a community. We don't
follow an economy of money but an "Ökonomie der Aufmerksamkeit" ("Economy of
Attention") which is the title of a work of the Viennese Georg Franck. His
work on the changes of our information
society on he ecenomic level is the theoretical apercu of this step.
For the audience this means, You Don't have to pay money for phonoTaktik
events, but attention and respect. You can show Your attention by taking part
in the daily live of the Viennese scene in the weeks before the festival.
That interest allows You the registration on the electronic guestlist.
"Pay attention" is the motto.
A nice side effect of the electronic registration system shows a picture of
the community - which is defined by the guestlist - in the internet. Whoever
thinks, this is to complicated, can pay for his ticket at the doors of every
event (if not booked out by the guestlist). So he can see what his attention
would have been worth.
