I remember a thread a while ago semi-related to this (ie good background
music amongst crappy programming). Someone brought up what I thought was a
good explanation: people working at MTV and the commercial radio stations
might actually be into underground/experimental/whatever music but are
unable to get it into regular programming due to the powers that be (idiots
running the station or TV channel, etc). So, they sneak in their favorites
whenever they can: in the background of lead-ins, IDs, and so on.
