I'm a big fan of the early experimental electronic sound/BBC Radiophonic Workshop sound, ala Boards of Canada, Add N to X, Broadcast, and at times, Stereolab. Any suggestions on other current music in this vein? (BTW, I have to put in the highest recommendations for Raymond Scott's recently repressed "Soothing Sounds for Baby" 3-album collection. Sublime ambient bliss in the style of SAW2, and clacking beats ('Toy Typewriter' on volume 2) that outdoes Ae and AFX 35 years prior. And unlike AFX, yes, he did build his own synths.) nick

you might do well to find 'the electric lucifer' by bruce haack which was reissued recently (so i guess that makes it current in a way..) Apart from that, you could try tracking down stuff by pram (various labels) or mum and dad (twisted nerve).

and, if you believe the liner notes, he built the first ever electronic sequencer too! <waves>

I realize, as per a couple folk a while back, that I should be finding everything out all by myself (whatever that actually means), but is anybody aware of any interesting venues/events/info sources/anything along the IDM vein in the Portland (OR) area? I've lived here since I was two, and I'm at a complete loss-- Europe was MUCH easier... I would love it if I turned out to be pathetically uninformed; as it is, I've been mostly bored with most of the medicre rock Portland seems to churn and attract, and the clubs seem tepid or teenie-bopper at best. Help. Thanx. M. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.
