just got this today, and it's very nice, if a bit short, but then it is an ep after all... 1. Iambic 5 Poetry 2. Fly Street 3. The Tide 4. Splask 5. Two Bass Hit (dub) 6. Varkatope 7. Gong Acid very similar to _Music Is..._, of course, but some extremely nice melodies shine on a few tracks. I'll post a detailed review sometime soon. mikebee ::mikebee@sirius.com ::21st Century Soul

It's more of a "foreground" record than "Rotted", I think -- he's made an effort to integrate elements of his earlier breaks n' melody driven sound into the looser hand-played structures he's been using lately. -d.w.

well i really don't think so :) - i got the cd in the mail last saturday and i've been playing over and over it since. there's 3 or 4 brilliant tracks on it. fly street and varkatope are both in-between his 'old' d&b and 'new' jazz styles, with some really nice combinations of sounds. the first track is nice too, but hasn't got much to do with the rest of the lp. plus you can hear the first efforts of tom's gamelan orchestra in two of the tracks - what else could you possibly want? by far the best sqp release in quite a while imo! np: andrew weatherall mix from warpnet - which is kinda nice indeed :) name [~] peter cozijn e-mail [~] pu@dds.nl habitation [~] lisse, the netherlands liusna [~] http://huizen.dds.nl/~pu/liusna

An Indonesian percussion orchestra. Lots of bell-like sounds, tuned fairly close to intervals on a tempered scale, but not quite. Gamelan is the traditional dance music of Indonesia. Strangely, I found the feel of Oval's 'Systemisch' a bit similar to some of the slower passages in gamelan stuff... I can't really justify it, except for the rhythms being hard to follow, and the quite harmonically simple, clear tones.
